Motorpoint is a British automotive retailer based in Derby, England. The company sells nearly-new and used vehicles through a network of 21 retail stores across the United Kingdom and an online platform. It also operates a business-to-business online auction site, Auction4Cars. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange.

History

Foundation and early years

Motorpoint was founded in April 1998 by Gary Warren and David Shelton. The company began trading from a single site in Derby. Initially, the business model focused on selling parallel imports, vehicles purchased in other European markets and imported to the UK, offering substantial savings compared to official UK list prices. The company recorded over 1,000 sales in the first 60 days of trading[1], and gained significant public attention following coverage on the BBC consumer rights programme Rip Off Britain, which highlighted the price disparity between the UK and European car markets. In 1999, Motorpoint launched "Boomerang," a car finance plan that was an early iteration of the now-standard personal contract purchase (PCP). This allowed customers to return the vehicle, purchase it outright, or use equity for a new vehicle at the end of the contract term. In 2000, Motorpoint opened a national call centre, allowing customers to buy their cars over the phone. By 2006, the company had expanded beyond Derby, opening four additional sites in Burnley, Glasgow, Newport, and Peterborough.

Expansion and flotation

In 2008, the group launched Auction4Cars, a dedicated online auction platform for selling part-exchange vehicles directly to the wholesale trade. In 2013, Mark Carpenter was appointed Group CEO, having previously served as the Chief Financial Officer. Under his leadership, the company continued its physical expansion, opening sites in Birmingham (2013), Widnes (2014), and Birtley (2015). On 13 May 2016, Motorpoint floated on the London Stock Exchange. The initial public offering (IPO) raised £100 million and valued the company at £200 million.[2]

Recent developments (2020-present)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Motorpoint launched a complimentary home delivery service in March 2020 to maintain operations during national lockdowns.[3] Expansion continued as restrictions eased, with new stores opening in Manchester, Maidstone, and Portsmouth between 2021 and 2022. In 2023, the company marked its 25th anniversary by expanding into Edinburgh, Coventry, and Ipswich. In 2024, Motorpoint opened its 21st store in Norwich and introduced in-house MOT testing facilities at its Coventry branch. Following a period of market headwinds, the group reported a return to profitability in its FY25 results (year ending 31 March 2025), citing the success of its "Brilliant Basics" operational strategy.[4]
