Draft:Mathilde Biron

Biography

Mathilde Biron is a French photographer and author born in 1997 and based in Paris. Her photographic work explores the body and intimacy with a great freedom of vision. This free and direct gaze is most often conveyed through the grain and texture so prominent in her film photographs. Simplicity and authenticity are her watchwords; she doesn't seek to impress with artificial staging, but rather to tell her story, using soft focus, subtle lighting, and palpable sensuality..[1]

Before turning to photography, she worked as a model while pursuing her studies: her experience as a model was invaluable in shaping her understanding of gazes and bodies.[2]

Mathilde has an artistic background, including preparatory courses in arts and design, a bachelor's degree in philosophy of design, and a diploma in event scenography—but she is also largely self-taught in photography, particularly in the use of film and Polaroid.[3]

A rising star, she has been described as "one of the most promising photographers of her generation" by Thibault Loucheux Legendre, editor-in-chief of Snobinart.[4]

Training and Artistic Background

After attending preparatory classes for the École Normale Supérieure in the Design section, where she discovered film photography and developing, she pursued studies in the philosophy of design and obtained a degree in event scenography [5]. A self-taught photographer, she nevertheless developed a refined mastery of film and Polaroid.

Artistic Style and Themes

Her work focuses on intimacy, femininity, authentic nudity, and bodies in their sensitive fragility, questioning these notions often troubled by the digital age [6]. The bodies are often nude, without artifice or appropriation of a particular style of dress or era. She favors analog and therefore vintage tools (Nikon FM2, Pentax Espio or Olympus, Polaroid) to restore a unique materiality to each image.
