Dr. Martin Rainer Josef Kolb (born May 21, 1964) a German-Canadian Respirologist who is the inaugural holder of the Jack Gauldie Boehringer Ingelheim Chair in Interstitial Lung Diseases[1] and previous holder of the Moran Campbell Chair in Respiratory Medicine, two endowed chairs at McMaster University. He is currently the Research Director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton and a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and Director of Respiratory at McMaster University.[2]

Biography

Education

Dr. Kolb graduated from Medical School at Julius-Maximillian University Wϋrzburg in 1992, where he went on to also complete his residency in internal medicine from 1993-1999. During this time, he also completed his residency training in clinical and anatomical pathology at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg. Following a meeting with internationally renowned Canadian immunologist, Dr. Jack Gauldie, he was invited to complete a post-doctoral research fellowship in molecular medicine at McMaster University, under his mentorship.[1] Following this, Dr. Kolb received the academic title of Privatdozent, a doctoral academic designation, from his alma mater in 2003.[3]

Teaching and professional experience

Dr. Kolb is Tenured Professor of Medicine at McMaster University, where he also served as Director of the Division of Respirology from 2013-2024[4]. He is Research Director at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, a globally recognized center for respiratory research and care. In 2015, Dr. Kolb cofounded the Canadian Registry for Pulmonary Fibrosis, a multi-center registry designed to study the natural history of fibrotic interstitial lung disease in adults, of which he is the co-Director.[5]

Professional contributions

Research and development

Dr. Kolb’s is most well known for his research into the key mechanisms and treatable pathways in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease, including gene expression, signaling pathways, and progenitor cell biology. He has been a part of many pivotal international clinical trials, across 30 countries, have been conducted, with a focus on biomarkers and novel therapeutics for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.[1] He has assisted in the development and evaluation of the now standardized use of the antifibrotic drugs Nintedanib and Pirfenidone for this disease[6]. This was the first effective treatment of available for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis[7].

Editorial work

Dr. Kolb was the Chief Editor for the European Respiratory Journal from 2018 to 2022. Under his tenure, during the COVID-19 pandemic that gave way to an unprecedented volume of respirology submissions across medical journals, the journal’s impact factor rose from 12 to 34[2]. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, review articles, and editorials, in leading journals such as the European Respiratory Journal, The New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and The American Journal of Pathology. Over the course of his career, he has collectively garnered over 30,000 citations, earning him an H-index of 87.[8]

Notable awards and Honors

Dr. Kolb is the inaugural holder of the Jack Gauldie Boehringer Ingelheim Chair in Interstitial Lung Diseases, named after his mentor. He previously held the Moran Campbell Chair in Respiratory Medicine.[1]

In 2011, He was the recipient of the Excellence Award in Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, China. Dr. Kolb was awarded the Anne and Neil McArthur Research Award from St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton in 2021.[9] He received a Presidential Honorary Membership with the European Respiratory Society in 2022.[10]

He was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2024[4] and the American Thoracic Society in 2025.[11]
