The term mamaissance is a term coined by the attorney Matt Grills (alternatively mamasance or mamanaissance) after the death of his father in early 2021. He had watched his mother act as a loving and supportive caregiver for the last few years of her husband's life. The love and devotion she had for her spouse was evident, but Mr. Grills also saw the wear and toll that it took upon his mother.

Creation of Mamaissance

After a period of mourning, Mr. Grills began to see a "renaissance" in his mother's life towards the end of 2021. She began to spend renewed time with friends and family. Mr. Grills took it upon himself to begin inquiring of his mother about fun memories she would like to relive and/or make. Her mamaissance began.

His mother began to take special trips, not just to see her grandchildren and relatives of her husband, but unique adventures she had not really embarked on since her teenage and college years. These included a trip to Disneyland Resort and also to revisit Knott's Berry Farm. Continuing adventures include engaging in special trips to visit her grandchildren on multiple occasions in a year (they live out of state) as well as unique experiences like Medieval Times in Buena Park.

This is the essence of a period of mamaissance for a widow who is entered the second phase of her life after losing a dear spouse. What truly makes this a new period of renewal, similar to the ancient Renaissance period, is children taking an active part to honor their mother with special adventures that bring back fond memories or craft new times of joy.
