Magni Moss
Magni Moss (born 1982) is a Swedish artist, curator, and lecturer. He maintains a transcontinental practice, working from bases in Fremantle, Western Australia, and Gässemåla, Sweden. His work has been exhibited internationally across Europe, Southeast Asia, North America, and Australia.[1]
Notable solo exhibitions include Pleasant Pineapple at Museum Vandalorum in Värnamo, Sweden (2023) and 13 True Stories at Last Resort in Copenhagen, Denmark (2016). He has also participated in significant group shows such as Conflicting Evidence at 1857 in Oslo, Norway (2015); Next to Perplex You, curated by Jan Verwoert at Galerie Martin Janda in Vienna, Austria (2013); and Foreign Figs for Florence, curated by Dingum at Villa Romana in Florence, Italy (2012).
Moss's work is held in the public collections of several Scandinavian institutions, including Linnaeus University in Växjö, Vetlanda City Hall, and the Danish Arts Foundation. His career has been supported by numerous grants and awards from bodies such as the Swedish Arts Council.
Artistic Practice
Moss's artistic practice, primarily in painting, engages with the Western painting tradition while establishing a methodology distinct from prevailing contemporary discourses. His open-ended process integrates conceptual and discursive elements with a focus on direct material sensation and immanent experience. The aim of his project is one of unification and connectedness, positioning the painted picture as an act of contemplation and poetry, which also serves as a point of departure for works in other mediums and installation.
Critic Kristan Vistrup Madsen has described Moss's approach as a resistance to fixed style. Madsen notes that in Moss's paintings, "vague stylistic references to, say, modernist abstraction or ancient Roman portraiture, appear only long enough to register as subject, not form. By always beginning again, he allows his paintings to remain in a kind of nascent state... where the distinction between being and language is not yet quite possible."[2]
Moss has been represented by AVA (a commercial gallery based in Boorloo/Perth) since 2025.[1]
Education
Moss began his formal art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, studying under Leon Tarasewicz from 2001 to 2002. He later attended the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, where he studied under Willem de Rooij (2007–2008). He completed his Master of Fine Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, Umeå, in 2009.[3]
Curatorial Work
Moss has organized a range of independent curatorial projects and founded several artist-run initiatives. These include establishing the Sikås Art Center (2014), an institution that has featured artists such as Matthew Lutz-Kinoy and Michele di Menna in its programs. Under its auspices, he directed the Sikås Biennale (2020), co-directed the Tutti Frutti residency (2018), curated the group exhibition Summer in Sikås at Växjö Konsthall (2017), organized the Sikås Summer Symposium (2015), and facilitated a series of artist talks in Östersund (2014–2015).
His other initiatives include co-directing ShowRoom, a project space in Malmö (2014), and running the Berlin project space "TANC" (2009–2010). More recent projects include his involvement with Gässemåla AiR (2023–2024)[4] and the Smålandstriennalen (2023).
Teaching
Moss has held several teaching positions in Sweden and internationally. In Sweden, he served as the Director and head teacher at Kronobergs Konstskola (2019–2024), was a co-founder and teacher at the post-academic institute Landings Thoughts in Växjö (2022–2024), and head teacher at Östersund Art School (2014–2015). He has also been a guest teacher at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, the Academy of Fine Arts in Umeå (2008, 2013–2014), and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
Internationally, he has lectured or taught at Emily Carr University of Arts and Design in Vancouver, Canada (2014); Vessel Contemporary in Fremantle, Australia (2025)[5]; and the École de Mont-Cotton in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, France (2014).
