Comment: I’m hesitant. 2 seems to contribute to NCORP to some extent, but the sourcing is extensively primary and while the company has RS covering some of its controversies, a lot of them seem to fall foul of WP:ILLCON. I would not be surprised if this is notable but I don’t think it’s currently demonstrated. Perhaps you could help by pointing out your WP:THREE here. Fermiboson (talk) 04:13, 10 December 2025 (UTC)

MPreis (stylized as MPREIS) is an Austrian food retail company operating stores in the five Austrian states of Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia, Vorarlberg, and Upper Austria, as well as in South Tyrol, Italy. Its main retail lines include MPREIS supermarkets, MiniM stores, Baguette, and T&G.[2]
History and corporate structure
The roots of this Tyrolean family business date back to 1920, founded by Therese Mölk (1872–1958). The "M" in the company name comes from her surname. By 1929, Therese Mölk and her husband, parents of eight children, operated eleven stores, a bakery, and a dairy. By 1946, the company employed 100 staff members.[3] In 1974, the company transitioned to a GmbH, transforming traditional grocery stores into modern supermarkets. The opening of the first MPREIS store on Andechsstraße in Innsbruck marked this shift.[4] As of 2025, the company is led by five managing directors.[5] In 2015, MPREIS signed a cooperation agreement with Markant Austria for back-office processes.[6] The chain expanded to Upper Austria in 2019.[7]
Architecture
In the 1980s, MPREIS moved away from utilitarian supermarket designs, collaborating with architects to create tailored solutions for each location. In 2012, it opened Central Europe's first passivhaus supermarket in Pinswang, with more following. These architecturally distinctive stores, designed with local and international architects, have received numerous awards. In 2004, MPREIS represented Austria at the Venice Biennale of Architecture.[8]
The MPREIS store in Wenns, built in 2001, earned architects awards such as the Tyrol Architecture Prize (2002) and the New Building in the Alps Award (2006). It was also nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2003.[9][10]
Production facilities and retail lines
In 2024, MPREIS operated over 270 stores across Tyrol, South Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia, Upper Austria, and Vorarlberg, along with 155 Baguette café-bistros, 35 T&G stores in Tyrol, Carinthia, Salzburg, and Styria, several fuel station shops, and 50 MiniM stores.[11][12][13][14] The company employed around 6,000 staff from approximately 80 nations.[4][15]
The company operates two production facilities: the Therese Mölk Bakery and the Alpenmetzgerei. Its headquarters, logistics center with warehouse, fleet, and both production facilities are located in Völs, near Innsbruck.
- Therese Mölk Bakery: The bakery will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. In 2013, new facilities were built, making it Tyrol's largest bakery.[16][17]
- Alpenmetzgerei: Meat processing has been a core area for 25 years. In 2013, a new meat processing and butchery facility began operations, producing pork, beef, sausages, and ham.[17][18]
- Baguette: Bread specialty stores with café-bistros are attached to most markets.
- T&G: This line offers alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and bulk packaging across all product categories.
- MiniM: These stores provide local supply in small Tyrolean communities, offering a reduced range at the same prices and promotions as MPREIS supermarkets.
- Shop MPREIS: Integrated into regional partner Gutmann's fuel stations, these stores offer extended hours at supermarket prices.
Allegations of unfair competition
In May 2023, MPREIS management sent pro forma invoices to suppliers with a letter requesting "investments of several tens of thousands of euros in MPREIS." The letter described a transformation process, stating: "To implement this project, we need your support. Specifically, MPREIS expects you, as a key account, to invest 'xxxx' euros in our shared future. We have already ordered a pro forma invoice." It added that MPREIS would "monitor the willingness to provide support as a partner" and that "it is up to you to turn this project into reality." Suppliers felt pressured, as a pro forma invoice typically implies deductions from future deliveries. MPREIS's significant purchasing power and the letter's wording suggested potential restrictions for non-compliant suppliers.[19][20]
On November 10, 2023, the Federal Competition Authority filed 16 penalty applications with the Cartel Court for violations of the Fair Competition Conditions Act (FWBG), effective January 1, 2022. The court may impose fines of up to €500,000 per application.[21][22][23][24]
