Lu Bango is an American singer‑songwriter whose work blends elements of folk, pop, and acoustic rock. Active since the early 1990s, Bango is best known for the independently released album The Little Bang Theory and for the song “Morning Person,” which appeared on the Smithsonian Folkways Fast Folk compilation Fast Folk Musical Magazine (August 1993, Vol. 7, No. 6): Philadelphia Phast Pholks.
Bango’s earliest known commercial recording is the song “Morning Person,” released in 1993 as part of the Fast Folk Musical Magazine series issued by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. The track appears on the compilation Fast Folk Musical Magazine (August 1993, Vol. 7, No. 6): Philadelphia Phast Pholks and features Bango on guitar and vocals with violinist Eleanor Pollak.
In 2000, Bango released the full‑length album The Little Bang Theory on the independent label Sam Records. The album was recorded and produced with Kevin Johnson and Mike Harvey (Actionadale Recording Studios) and mastered by engineer Bill Wolf. The Little Bang Theory contains twelve original songs, including “Enjoy the Oxygen,” “Does This Count for Sunday?,” “Past Imperfect Tense,” “She Sells,” “She’s the Man,” “The State We’re In,” “Makes No Difference,” “Steppingstone,” “City Garden,” “Little Landingpad,” “Guillotine,” and “Anyday.” The album was later made available on major streaming platforms.
Online genre classifications and compilation notes describe Bango’s music as rooted in folk‑influenced singer‑songwriter traditions with pop and acoustic rock elements. Across The Little Bang Theory and “Morning Person,” Bango’s songs emphasize narrative lyrics, wordplay, and melodic arrangements, often built around acoustic guitar with occasional string and band instrumentation.
Upon its release in 2000, The Little Bang Theory received positive critical attention. In a review for The Washington Post, critic Mike Joyce compared Bango’s songwriting to Elvis Costello and Freedy Johnston and praised the album’s “first‑rate pop songs” characterized by smart lyrics, memorable melodies, and distinctive arrangements. Joyce singled out tracks such as “Any Day,” “Guillotine,” “She’s the Man,” “City Garden,” “Past Imperfect Tense,” and “Does This Count for Sunday?” as examples of Bango’s careful, sometimes cunning word choice and the album’s quietly soulful, largely acoustic‑rooted sound. A separate review appeared on the independent music site Indie‑Music.com, contributing additional online coverage of the album.
