Lev Savvich Makov (1830-1883) was a Russian Imperial statesman. He graduated from the Page Corps in 1849 and served in the Life Guards Uhlan Regiment.[1]
Career
In the 1850s, Makov served military and civil administrative roles in the Russian Empire. His work during that time included peasant affairs in the western provinces of the Russian Empire. He later served as head of the chancery at the Ministry of Internal Affairs under A. E. Timashev.[2] In 1875, Makov participated in administrative work for the reunification of the Uniate Church in the Kingdom of Poland.[3] He became Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in 1876.[4] Makov served as Minister of Internal Affairs of Russia from 1878 to 1880.[5] During Makov's time as Minister, he made reforms on local police constables and internal security measures.[6] Following the assassination of General N. V. Mezentsev in 1878, Makov supported government appeals for public cooperation against revolutionary activity.[7] In 1880, Makov became Minister of Posts and Telegraphs and also headed the Department of Spiritual Affairs of Foreign Faiths.[8] In 1881, Makov became a member of the State Council.[9] In 1883, he was appointed chairman of a commission reviewing legislation concerning Jewish populations in the Russian Empire.[10]
Estate
Makov was a major landowner, holding approximately 6,800 hectares of land in 1879.[11]
He owned the Maryina Gorka estate in present-day Belarus, where a manor house was constructed and the grounds were developed during his ownership.[12]
Death
Makov died in 1883. Some sources report that his death was by suicide, though details vary between accounts.[13]
