Kroma Wellness (styled as kroma.) is an American functional nutrition company headquartered in Del Mar, California. Founded in 2021 by wellness entrepreneur Lisa Odenweller, the company sells shelf-stable, instant superfood-centric foods, snacks, and beverages, and is best known for its flagship 5-Day Reset program. Kroma currently operates as a direct-to-consumer (DTC) brand and is structured as a Public-benefit corporation (PBC).[1]

Background

The functional nutrition and superfood market expanded significantly in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, as consumer interest in preventive health and immune support grew. Kroma Wellness entered this market with a philosophy grounded in the idea that "food is medicine" and that premium, nutrient-dense eating does not have to be complex or time-consuming.[2]

Founding and history

Lisa Odenweller and Beaming Wellness

Lisa Odenweller began her career in the health and wellness industry in 2010. After experiencing personal health challenges, including serious gut issues, inflammation, fatigue and hair loss that her physician attributed to aging, and after her daughter was diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Odenweller pursued a food-as-medicine approach. Within two weeks of overhauling her family's diet, she reported that her own symptoms improved and her daughter was taken off medication, which she describes as the catalyst for her entrepreneurial path.[3]

In September 2011, she beta-launched Beaming Wellness, a culinary plant-based cleanse program initially run out of her home. Positive response led her to open the first Beaming cafe in Del Mar, California, in December 2012. The 900-square-foot location reportedly generated nearly three million dollars in revenue in its first year, and the chain grew to ten locations across Southern California within five years, raising approximately 4.5 million dollars in capital and cultivating what media described as a cult-like following. Odenweller departed the company in 2017 following disputes with partners, and the brand later changed hands.[3][4]

Creation of Kroma

After leaving Beaming, Odenweller spent several years reflecting on lessons learned before beginning work on a new concept. She started developing Kroma's formulations in 2018, working with superfoods and adaptogens to create instant, shelf-stable products that replicated her nutritional philosophy similar to that of Beaming's without requiring a physical cafe.[4]

Kroma Wellness launched publicly on July 22, 2021, as a direct-to-consumer brand selling online at kromawellness.com. The company launched with approximately 20 products, including The Kroma 5-Day Reset as its hero product. An accompanying mobile app was released in August 2021 to guide customers through the Reset program.[4][5]

Odenweller's daughter, Lexi Odenweller, joined the company from its earliest stages, working in marketing, the ambassador program, and the influencer program. Lexi had previously worked at Beaming locations in San Diego and Los Angeles, beginning as a smoothie barista when she was a teenager.[6]

Products and programs

Product philosophy

Kroma's ingredient philosophy centres on sourcing what the company describes as organic, ethically sourced superfoods from global suppliers, and on combining those ingredients to serve both nutritional function and flavour simultaneously. The company uses over 150 distinct superfood and adaptogen ingredients across its full product range. Specific sourcing commitments cited by the brand include organic ceremonial-grade matcha sourced from Japan, grass-fed collagen and bone broth produced in Australia through a proprietary dehydration process, and chocho (Andean lupin) protein grown at altitude in Ecuador. The company states it sources organic ingredients wherever certification is available, while noting that some ingredients such as collagen and chocho are not yet available with organic certification despite what it describes as clean farming practices.[7][1]

All Kroma products carry the standard U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) disclaimer: "These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease."[8]

The 5-Day Reset

The 5-Day Reset is Kroma's flagship product. It is a structured, five-day nutrition program consisting of approximately ten nutrient-dense meals and beverages per day, totalling up to 100 grams of protein daily. All items are shelf-stable and require only water to prepare. The Reset is available in several editions including Signature and Deluxe, with the latter including additional accessories and add-on products.[9][10]

The brand positions The Reset as distinct from conventional juice cleanses by emphasising protein sufficiency and caloric nourishment rather than deprivation. The program is designed to eliminate common dietary inflammatory triggers such as gluten, dairy, refined sugar, alcohol, and processed foods, replacing them with superfoods, adaptogens, and antioxidants.[11]

A central emphasis of The Reset, and of Kroma's broader product line, is making it simple to reach 100 grams of protein per day without meal planning, cooking, or tracking. The 5-Day Reset is structured so that consuming all ten daily items provides approximately 100 grams of protein through a combination of bone broths (12 to 15 grams each), plant-protein smoothies (20 grams each), the Super Porridge (8 grams), and the Beauty Matcha Latte (6 to 12 grams) and added meat or plant protein as desired. Because all products are shelf-stable and require only water, the company positions the system as accessible to people with demanding schedules, frequent travel, or limited time to prepare meals. Nutrition research broadly supports high daily protein intake for preserving lean muscle mass, supporting satiety, and stabilising blood sugar, particularly in women navigating hormonal transitions and in individuals on calorie-reducing protocols, such as GLP-1 medications.[12][9]

Each day of the program is colour-coded and individually portioned. The Reset includes the following daily components:

Superfood smoothies

The protein smoothies are plant-based blends delivering 20 grams of protein per serving. They are built on a base of chocho (Andean lupin seed), pumpkin seed protein, and pea protein, providing all nine essential amino acids. Available flavours include Vanilla Cinnamon and Cacao Banana. The smoothies also contain digestive enzymes, adaptogenic mushrooms such as reishi and cordyceps, and maca root. The chocho protein base is noted for being a whole-food, non-isolate protein source with a complete amino acid profile while remaining dairy-free, soy-free, and non-GMO.[9][13]

Bone and vegetable broths

The 5-Day Reset incorporates three broth options consumed throughout each day. The 24K Chicken Bone Broth delivers 12 grams of protein per serving and is made from pasture-raised, hormone-free chicken dried through a proprietary process. It is boosted with bovine collagen, turmeric, and a blend of spices. The 24K Beef Bone Broth provides 15 grams of protein per serving and is made from 100 percent grass-fed beef. The Veggie Broth with Plant Protein provides 7 grams of protein per serving from chocho plant protein and is formulated with red miso, organic vegetables, and turmeric, offering a dairy-free and vegan alternative. Both bone broths are produced in Australia using what the company describes as a proprietary drying process intended to preserve maximum nutrition and flavour.[14][15][16]

Beauty Matcha Latte

The Beauty Matcha Latte is described by Kroma as its best-selling product. It is formulated with organic ceremonial-grade matcha sourced from Japan, bovine collagen providing 6 to 12 grams of protein per serving depending on scoop size, and a proprietary Beauty Mushroom Blend consisting of six adaptogenic mushrooms: chaga, cordyceps, maitake, antrodia, turkey tail, and king trumpet. Additional ingredients include organic turmeric root extract, organic ginger extract, organic maca, organic goji, monk fruit, organic maple sugar, and Himalayan pink salt. The product also contains L-theanine, an amino acid naturally present in matcha that is associated with calm focus without sedation. The formulation omits cane sugar, using monk fruit and maple sugar as sweeteners. The brand notes that ceremonial-grade matcha is shade-grown and hand-harvested to preserve chlorophyll, L-theanine, and catechins.[17][18][13]

Superfood snacks

The OMG Cookie Butter is a spreadable nut butter formulated with organic raw almond butter, organic coconut butter, organic coconut oil, organic hemp seeds, organic goji berries, chocho plant protein, organic coconut palm sugar, organic maple sugar, organic lucuma, organic Ceylon cinnamon, monk fruit, and Himalayan pink salt. The product is gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free, and non-GMO. The brand positions it as a functional snack providing healthy fats, plant protein, fibre, and antioxidants without refined sugar. It received a "Best Gift for Foodies" recognition from USA Today and is commonly served alongside the Super Porridge.[19][20]

The Super Porridge is a hot or cold breakfast cereal delivering 8 grams of protein per serving. Its ingredient base includes almond meal, organic sunflower seeds, organic hemp seeds, organic coconut flour, chocho plant protein, organic rolled oats, organic goji berries, pecan meal, walnut meal, organic flaxseed meal, organic oat flour, organic coconut palm sugar, organic Ceylon cinnamon, organic maple sugar, monk fruit, and Himalayan pink salt. The product is gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free, and can be prepared in under one minute with water or non-dairy milk.[21][13]

Evening elixirs

The evening elixirs in the Reset program are calming blends formulated with magnesium and L-theanine, positioned to support relaxation and sleep quality at the end of each day. Magnesium is included for its role in muscle relaxation and nervous system regulation, while L-theanine is associated with promoting relaxation without drowsiness.[11]

Daily Essentials

Beyond The Reset, Kroma offers a broader range of individual products sold as Daily Essentials. These are categorized by the company under the headings of Lattes, Broths, Protein Powders, Snacks, Hydration, and Supplements. Products are also grouped on the company's website by wellness benefit, including Weight Loss, High Protein, Hormones, Energy, Gut Health, Skin, and Metabolism.[8]

Notable individual products outside the Reset programme include:

  • Super Core: A dairy-free colostrum supplement launched in 2025 and reported on by Forbes. Actress and lifestyle entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow publicly included the product among her wellness essentials in February 2026 (see below).[22][23]
  • Supergreens Elixir: A daily greens powder positioned as a broad-spectrum micronutrient supplement intended to support immunity, metabolism, detoxification, and gut health.[7]
  • Calming and Restore Magnesium: A standalone magnesium supplement sold as an evening supplement for stress relief and sleep support.[24]
  • Ultimate Vitality Latte: Described by the company as a golden milk upgrade, this latte is formulated with turmeric and additional adaptogens.[24]

Super Core (2025)

In August 2025, Kroma launched Super Core, a dairy-free colostrum supplement developed in partnership with New York City-based biotechnology company Helaina. The product uses Helaina's proprietary ingredient effera, a human-identical lactoferrin produced via precision fermentation rather than derived from bovine sources. Lactoferrin is a bioactive protein found naturally in human breast milk and colostrum, associated with roles in iron metabolism, immune function, and gut barrier integrity.[25]

Super Core also contains ImmunoLin, a purified bovine-derived immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody blend that Kroma states contains no lactose or milk proteins, making it suitable for most consumers with dairy sensitivities. The product retails at $120 for approximately 60 servings and is intended to be mixed with cool water or a smoothie, as heat can reduce the colostrum's potency.[26]

Super Core is validated by NSF International's Certified for Sport programme, an independent third-party certification recognised by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and the Canadian Football League, and recommended by the NFL, NBA, PGA, and LPGA. The certification confirms that a product has been tested for more than 290 substances banned by major sporting organisations, that its label claims match its contents, and that it is manufactured in a facility meeting current Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards audited by NSF. The effera ingredient underpinning Super Core is supported by eight peer-reviewed publications and a clinical trial demonstrating that the human body does not develop antibodies against it, indicating immunological compatibility. Every production batch of effera undergoes third-party testing for concentration, purity, heavy metals, and microbial safety.[27][28]

Helaina announced Kroma Wellness as one of its commercial launch partners in September 2024 alongside a $45 million Series B funding round. Forbes reported on the Super Core launch in August 2025. Gwyneth Paltrow subsequently included the product in a February 2026 Instagram post listing her personal wellness essentials.[23][22]

Menopause and perimenopause

Kroma maintains a dedicated Hormones product collection on its website, addressing the needs of women who are cycling, postpartum, perimenopausal, or experiencing hormonal imbalance. Perimenopause and menopause are associated with declining oestrogen and progesterone levels, symptoms including weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, and disrupted sleep, and a metabolic environment in which many women find that dietary approaches which previously worked stop producing results. Systemic inflammation is a recognised feature of this transition, and clinicians at Johns Hopkins Medicine and elsewhere have identified high protein intake and anti-inflammatory dietary patterns as primary strategies for managing symptoms and preserving lean muscle mass.[29]

Kroma positions both The 5-Day Reset and its Daily Essentials as directly suited to this demographic. The brand's argument is that women in hormonal transition need not less food but different food: a high-protein, nutrient-dense, adaptogen-rich structure built around nourishment rather than restriction. Delivering approximately 100 grams of protein daily alongside healthy fats and fibre, The Reset removes common inflammatory triggers including refined sugar, gluten, dairy, and alcohol, while replacing them with superfoods, adaptogens including maca and adaptogenic mushrooms, and anti-inflammatory botanicals. Consumer testimonials associated with the brand include accounts of women losing five to ten pounds during the programme after other approaches had not produced results, while reporting feeling adequately nourished throughout. The Daily Essentials are positioned as a longer-term complement, providing the same high-protein, adaptogen-rich nutritional framework on an ongoing basis to support hormonal health between Reset cycles.[30][31][32]

GLP-1 positioning

Beginning in 2024 and 2025, Kroma developed a dedicated product positioning around users of GLP-1 receptor agonist medications such as semaglutide (marketed as Ozempic and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (marketed as Mounjaro and Zepbound). The company created a dedicated GLP-1 information page on its website and a curated "GLP-1 Friendly Daily Essentials" product collection.

GLP-1 receptor agonist medications suppress appetite and slow gastric emptying, which supports weight loss but can create nutritional risks including insufficient protein intake and associated lean muscle mass loss. Independent nutritional guidance from sources including the Mayo Clinic and U.S. News & World Report has identified high protein intake as a primary strategy for preserving muscle during GLP-1 medication use, with general recommendations of at least 60 to 80 grams of protein per day for those on these medications.[33]

Kroma positions its products as addressing this need through their high protein content and nutrient density in small-volume, easy-to-tolerate servings that do not produce the heavy, overly full sensation that GLP-1 medications can make uncomfortable. The company's website states that its GLP-1 Friendly Daily Essentials are "designed to nourish without the heavy, overly full feeling" while helping "maintain muscle mass" and "support digestion."[34]

The company's High Protein Bundle is explicitly described on the website as "especially powerful if you're on GLP-1 therapy," combining the Beauty Matcha Latte, bone broths, and protein smoothies into a curated high-protein daily structure.[12]

Kroma advisor Dr. Will Cole has also published guidance on the brand's blog discussing how high dietary protein intake naturally stimulates the body's own GLP-1 hormone secretion as part of the digestive process, noting that protein consumption triggers endogenous GLP-1 release, which helps regulate appetite.[35]

Mobile application

Kroma offers a free companion app, available on the Apple App Store, designed to support customers through The 5-Day Reset. Features include a daily schedule, shopping list, checklists, wellness content, an intermittent fasting timer, a box breathing trainer, and guided meditations. The app has undergone multiple updates since its 2021 launch.[36]

Business model and marketing

Kroma operates exclusively as a direct-to-consumer brand, selling through its website. Products can be purchased individually, in bundles, or through a subscription service that offers discounts and free shipping. The company also maintains wholesale and ambassador programs.[8]

Lisa Odenweller has described the brand's early marketing strategy as primarily relationship-driven rather than paid-advertising-driven. After finding limited returns on paid social media advertising, the company shifted focus to organic investor relationships and celebrity word-of-mouth. According to reporting by Modern Retail, Kroma generated seven million dollars in gross revenue in its first year of operation, a result Odenweller attributed largely to the organic credibility she had built through Beaming.[37]

Mindbodygreen recognized Odenweller as one of its "100 Women to Watch in Wellness."[3]

Funding and investors

Kroma raised a $5.5 million seed round at its July 2021 launch. The round was approximately 90 percent female-backed and drew from both institutional and notable individual investors. Participants included actress and wellness entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow, actress and comedian Amy Schumer, author and philanthropist Jessica Seinfeld, Beautycounter CEO Gregg Renfrew, former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, WNBA player Skylar Diggins, G9 Ventures founder Amy Griffin, Kings Point Capital, and Roth Capital Partners, among others.[4][38]

In February 2024, Kroma raised an additional $5.2 million in Series A venture funding, bringing its total disclosed funding to approximately $10.7 million.[39]

Investors have included institutional funds such as For Good Ventures, G9 Ventures, Short List Capital, Point King Capital, CN2 Ventures, and Fine Day Ventures.[37]

Advisory team

Kroma's published advisory team includes professionals in functional medicine, nutrition, and food product development:

  • Dr. Will Cole, DNM/DC: A functional medicine practitioner named one of the top 50 functional-medicine and integrative doctors in the United States. He is the bestselling author of Ketotarian, The Inflammation Spectrum, and the New York Times bestseller Intuitive Fasting. He serves as Kroma's Chief Medical Advisor.[2]
  • Sarah Wragge: Founder and Chief Nutritionist of Sarah Wragge Wellness, serving as Kroma's Nutrition Advisor.[8]
  • Meredith Baird: Founder of Nucifera Body, serving as a Kroma Consultant.[8]
  • Adina Niemerow: Author of Super Cleanse, serving as a Kroma Consultant.[8]

Reception and media coverage

Since its 2021 launch, Kroma has received coverage from a range of consumer and trade publications.

Vogue magazine described the 5-Day Reset as "the most delicious non-perishable Reset on the market."[36] The brand has also been covered by WWD, Fashionista, Modern Retail, dot.LA, Eat This, Not That, and The Quality Edit, among others.[4][37][1]

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow, an early investor and longtime supporter of the brand, publicly referenced Kroma's 5-Day Reset as her number one wellness essential for fall in a widely shared statement, and later included Kroma's Super Core Non-Dairy Colostrum in a February 2026 Instagram post showcasing her personal wellness staples.[36][23]

The brand was featured in a July 2021 Forbes article covering its celebrity-backed seed funding round.[38]

In December 2021, Vogue included Kroma in a feature on beauty and wellness founders discussing their New Year's resolutions. Beauty entrepreneur Nyakio Grieco cited Kroma's 5-Day Reset, describing it as "a cleanse that doesn't feel like a cleanse" and noting she used Kroma's broths and products while travelling.[40]

Rolling Stone magazine included Kroma in a January 2022 wellness feature, recommending the brand's Daily Essentials collection as a sustainable approach to healthy eating at the start of the year, noting that its latte mixes, breakfast porridges, smoothie bases, and snacks are "packed with vitamins, minerals and whole food-sourced ingredients" and "easy to incorporate into your daily routine without resorting to eliminating entire food groups."[41]

In late 2021, the brand received television broadcast coverage when NBC 4 Los Angeles featured The Kroma 5-Day Reset in a "California Live" segment as part of a presenter's top picks to revitalise heading into the new year.[42]
