Konfir Kabo (born 1 October 1973) is an Indonesian lawyer, businessman and philanthropist based in Melbourne, Australia. He is mostly known for his collection and support of Indonesian contemporary art under philanthropic initiative [https://www.project11.online/ Project Eleven[1] and his work in supporting Indonesian citizens in Australia.[2]

Early life

Konfir was born on 1 October 1973 in Makassar, a city in East Indonesia. He was the youngest of 3 children in a predominantly Chinese family with mixed Bugis ancestry. His mother, Bau Thenrik Gani, was founder of Sayonara, a successful hair and bridal salon and school in Makassar. His father, Daud Kabo, helped to build the [Tawon] medicated oil business owned by his uncle.

Konfir moved to Melbourne, Australia at the age of 14, studying at Caulfield Grammar. After completing high school, he completed a Bachelor of Commerce and Law at Monash University.

Konfir's first legal job was at N.A Young and Co Solicitors. He opened his own law firm in 2001, then named Konfir Kabo Migration Lawyer. In 2005, he moved to premises at 20 Collins Street, Melbourne, renaming the law firm to Kabo Lawyers. A general practice law firm, Kabo Lawyers was known for its particular expertise in migration law.[3] In 2022, Konfir received the Hassan Wirajuda Protection Award from the Indonesian government for his work in defending Indonesian citizens in Australia.[4] In 2025, he merged Kabo Lawyers with Aitken Partners.[5]

Business Career

Aside from his legal career, Konfir has business interests in property development and energy through his fuel investment company Aksara and fuel retail company Fueltech, under the umbrella of Kabo Group.[6] In 2017, Konfir sought to put his petrol station portfolio valued at more than $60 million for sale.[7]

Art Collection

Konfir is known as one of the largest collectors of contemporary Indonesian art outside Indonesia[8][9][10] and is active in the promotion and support of artists and art organisations under his foundation Project Eleven.[11] He has lent his collection to museums and exhibitions including The National Gallery of Victoria, The National Gallery of Australia[12], The Art Gallery of Ballarat,[13] Sydney Biennale,[14] Canberra Biennale, Castlemaine Art Museum[15] and the Indian Ocean Craft Triennale[16] amongst others. In 2020, he and his wife donated two sets of historical Indonesian puppets to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.[17][18]

As part of his philanthropic activity, Konfir sits on boards of the Victorian College of the Arts Foundation, Australia Indonesia Art Forum and the Centre of Asian Business and Economics, University of Melbourne.[19]

Personal life

Konfir has been married to composer and musician Monica Lim [20] since 1998 and they have two adult sons, Kaeden and Maxel Kabo.
