Khaznidon (Ossetian: Хæзнидон / Хæзныдон, meaning “river of abundance”) is a rural locality (a selo) in the Irafsky District of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania, Russia. It is the only inhabited settlement in the municipal formation of Khaznidon rural settlement.
Geography
Khaznidon is situated in the western part of Irafsky District, on the left bank of the Urukh River near the confluence of the Lakhumedon River. It lies approximately 7 km west of the district administrative centre, Chikola and about 82 km northwest of Vladikavkaz. The surrounding terrain is predominantly foothill and mountainous with mixed broadleaf forests. The village is bordered by the settlements of Toldzgun to the northwest, Novyi Urukh to the northeast, and Sovetskoye and Chikola to the east.
History
The settlement was historically known as Karazhaevo, first recorded in 1715 on the left bank of the Khaznidon River. Early settlers included the Digor noble family Karazhaevs from the village of Kamat, with later migration of other Digor families.
Demographics
As of the 2025 estimate, Khaznidon has a population of approximately 880 residents, predominantly of Digor Ossetian ethnicity.
Monuments
On May 5, 2017, a monument known as the Monument to the Soldier’s Mother was unveiled in the village. It commemorates the sacrifices of women who awaited the return of their sons from wartime, and was inspired by local resident Misirat Kambolova; the monument was created by sculptor Anatoly Sknarin and installed at the site of her home.
Economy and services
The village contains basic services including local administrative buildings, educational institutions, and a mosque. Roads connecting Khaznidon serve regional traffic between Chikola and nearby settlements.
