Kaiyoum (1970 – May 22, 1995) was an American-bred Arabian stallion known for his national-level show career and subsequent influence as a breeding sire. He was a son of the influential stallion Khemosabi. Kaiyoum resided for most of his life at Fallen Leaf Arabians in the United States.

Background

Kaiyoum was foaled in 1970 in the United States. He was sired by double National Champion Khemosabi and his dam, Bayanka, was a daughter of National Champion Bay Abi and *Bachantka who was a 15/16th sister to double National Champion Bask. Sheila Varian leased Khemosabi as a two year old and bred two full sisters to him, Bay Abi daughters Bayanka and Bachatka, resulting in Kaiyoum and his full blood sister Moska who was one of Varian Arabians most influential mares. Kaiyoum was sold to Bob and Anne Smith as a four year old. He was trained and shown to most of his championships by Anne and her son, Mike.[1]. His pedigree combined Crabbet, CMK (Crabbet–Magdah–Koheilan), and Polish bloodlines that are prominent in American Arabian breeding during the mid-to-late 20th century.

He was registered with the Arabian Horse Registry as AHR 62768 and stood approximately 14.3 hands tall. He had both hind stockings and a blaze. Kaiyoum spent the majority of his life at Fallen Leaf Arabians, where he stood at stud.

Show career

Kaiyoum achieved 25 championships in halter and performance and was Canadian National Reserve Champion Stallion and U.S. Top Ten Champion Stallion in 1980[2]

His show career and pedigree were covered in established Arabian horse publications, including Arabian Horse World and Arabian Horse Times, which regularly reported on national show results and featured prominent stallions during the 1980s and early 1990s.

Breeding career

Following his show career, Kaiyoum became a widely used breeding stallion at Fallen Leaf Arabians and later at Paragon Arabians. Registry records attribute 308 registered offspring to him, making him one of the more prolific sons of Khemosabi. Out of his offspring 20 plus percent of them were champions and seven of them were National winners.[2]

Several of his progeny earned recognition in Arabian Horse Association achievement programs, including awards for show and breeding accomplishments. In the "Arabian Horse World's Aristocrat Mares", Kaiyoum's daughter Kaiynda Special out of Rasraina, is tied for first place with Mosquerade (whose dam is Kaiyoum's full blood sister, Moska) and WC Caio Bell, all three with 15 champion offspring[3]. Furthermore, in the last issue of Arabian Horse World's Aristocrat Mare issue which also listed the number of stallions with three or more AHW Aristocrat daughters, Kaiyoum was fourth with 15 Aristocrat daughters, one more than his sire, Khemosabi. The three stallions who had more Aristocrat daughters, Bask (19), Afire Bey V(16) and Bey Shah (16), all had over 1000 0ffsring compared to Kaiyoum with 308[4]. His offspring competed in both halter and many performance disciplines, contributing to the continued influence of his bloodlines in American Arabian breeding.

Death

Kaiyoum died on May 22, 1995, at the age of 25.
