K. C. Varkey B.A., L.T. (20 February 1897 – 26 April 1938) was an Indian teacher, writer, public speaker, educationist, and social activist from Arpookara in present-day Kottayam district, Kerala. He is remembered as one of the early Catholic graduates from the Ettumanoor region of Travancore and for his contributions to education, literature, and local civic development during the early twentieth century.
Early life and family
K. C. Varkey was born on 20 February 1897 into the Kunnumpuram branch of the Palackal family at Arpookara, near Kottayam, in the erstwhile Kingdom of Travancore. He belonged to a family associated with the Catholic intellectual and spiritual traditions of central Travancore.
He received his primary education at the CMS LP School, Arpookara, and later studied at St. Ephrem’s School, Mannanam. He completed his higher studies during a period when access to university education was limited in Travancore.
Education

Varkey pursued collegiate studies at St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, affiliated with the University of Madras. In 1920, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Madras. He was regarded locally as one of the earliest Catholic graduates from the Ettumanoor Taluk region.
He later obtained the Licentiate in Teaching (L.T.) qualification from the Government Training College, Thiruvananthapuram, during 1925–26.

Teaching career
After completing his studies, Varkey joined St. Ephrem’s High School, Mannanam, as a teacher. He served there for many years and became known for his scholarship, discipline, and student-centered teaching methods.
Contemporary accounts describe him as an influential English and history teacher who emphasized moral instruction, clarity in teaching, and intellectual development. He reportedly avoided corporal punishment, which was common in schools during that period, and instead adopted a compassionate approach toward students.
Literary and intellectual activities
Apart from teaching, Varkey was active in literary and cultural circles in Travancore. He participated in literary meetings and public discussions alongside prominent Malayalam literary personalities of the period.
He maintained a personal collection of books, journals, and newspapers at his residence and made them available for public reading, reflecting his interest in knowledge dissemination and public education.
Varkey also contributed articles and essays to periodicals and served in editorial roles associated with Catholic and literary publications.
Writings
Among his known works is Signor Mussolini (1929), a Malayalam work discussing Benito Mussolini and contemporary European political developments. He also wrote essays and articles on literature, education, society, and religion.
Public life and social work
Varkey was associated with local civic and developmental initiatives in the Kottayam region. He was connected with public activities linked to the Deshabhivardhini Sabha and participated in petitions and representations submitted to the Travancore administration regarding regional development issues.
He is also remembered in connection with the Chungam region of Kottayam due to his civic involvement and public activities there, though he was not associated professionally with the engineering or construction of the Chungam bridge.
Death and legacy
K. C. Varkey died on 26 April 1938 at the age of 41. Despite his comparatively short life, he is remembered in Arpookara and Mannanam for his contributions to education, public discourse, and social awareness.
A biographical work titled K.C. Varkey: Arivum Athmeeyathayum Vruthamakkiya Karmayogi was later published by Kunnumpuram Publications documenting his life and contributions.
