Biography

[Joseph Michael Getsinger] was born in Camden, New Jersey in 1948. He grew up in a home with two brothers and two sisters, being the middle child. His parents Vincent Anton a Navy Veteran of WWII, and a bus driver and Anna Marie Getsinger a housewife who supported his artwork which developed early in life. They first saw his love for art when he won an art contest in fourth grade with landscape and wildlife in watercolor. This inspired him and it became the drive to do more and improve. This continued on through to high school when his high school art teacher, Miss Paterson had him teaching tenth and eleventh grade classes, as a senior, the art lesson of that day. This gave him the incentive to be an art teacher and planned on attending the Philadelphia College of Art. The Vietnam War interrupted that plan when Joe joined the United States Navy and became a communications technician. While stationed in Guam he created cartoon type of holiday cards and the design for a coin for the Guamanian coin club. The cartoon cards were used by the officers and sent out through the Pacific Fleet. Upon being honorably discharged in 1969 he applied to the New Jersey State Police was accepted and graduated in 1971 a a trooper. Once established in his new profession he continued his art education with noted Audubon, New Jersey artist George Cameron Vail at the Vail School of Art. This is where he crafted and honed his talent in oil painting and later acrylics which became his favorite medium. During the course of getting his paintings framed he met Charles Lombardo of JCT Galleries in Trenton, New Jersey. This later evolved into Mr. Lombardo publishing this artist's first etchings in 1976, like "Here's Looking at You Kid, a portrait of Humphrey Bogart, which sold out quickly. In 1978, he published the artist's first true Lithograph's which continued until 1980 when the artist started to self publish in 1980. At that time he offered his art to the Burn Foundation out of Philadelphia, Pa to aid in raising funds for burn victims/survivors with firefighter related art. This artist has been the official artist for the Burn Foundation since 1980 (45 Years) and continues to create images for them.
