Joseph Matick is an American poet, filmmaker, and musician based in Paris. [1][2][3] He is the author of the Baba Books trilogy and the short novel Cherry Wagon on Far West Press, with his work held by the American Library in Paris and independent bookshops including McNally Jackson and After 8 Books.[4][5][6][7][8] His practice extends into sound and film, notably the album Western Pink with The Jack Cardigan Orchestra and the short film ANNE FILM with Anne Waldman and Ambrose Bye.[9][10][11][12] Matick has also written runway text and voiceover for fashion label Winnie New York's FW24 collection, filmed at the American Library in Paris.[13][14]
Early life and education
Matick grew up on a farm in small-town America.[1] He studied journalism at the Ernie Pyle School before turning to poetry, later attending Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics.[1][2] In interviews he has described this period as a shift from commercial DJ work to a more library-driven engagement with poetry and philosophy.[1][2]
Career
Poetry and books
In 2021 Far West Press published three small-format volumes by Matick under the collective title Baba Books: New American Babble, Post Meridiem Seasick Fuzz and Animal My Soul.[4] Far West frames the trilogy as a hybrid, ritualistic series, and later issued a collected edition, The Baba Books, in the same year.[4]
Matick's short novel Cherry Wagon was published by Far West Press in 2022.[3][5] The book is distributed through independent outlets such as Sandman Books and is catalogued at the American Library in Paris.[5][6] In 2023 he self-published the hand-made poetry artist book Séance Imparfait: Twenty Two Poems, which is stocked by Paris bookshop After 8 Books as part of its artists' books and poetry selection.[8]
His books are also available through retailers including McNally Jackson in New York, which lists Animal My Soul in its catalog, and After 8 Books, which carries Far West editions of his work.[7][15]
Profiles in outlets such as Flaunt and Boys by Girls discuss Matick's writing within a broader cross-disciplinary practice that connects his poetry to music, film, and fashion contexts.[1][2]
Music
Matick released early solo material including the EP Two Songs, which was profiled by Flaunt in connection with his move away from DJ culture towards more experimental songwriting.[1] He also recorded and performed as part of the duo Girlyboi with Carly Russ, a project covered by Billboard, Flaunt and C-Heads among others, with pieces noting the pair's presence in fashion and music scenes in cities such as Paris, New York and Los Angeles.[16][17][18]
In 2024 Matick released the album Western Pink with The Jack Cardigan Orchestra on Velvet Bikini / Avec Jack.[9][10] The record is described by its creators as a cinematic work assembled over a decade from tapes, voice notes and scenes recorded in multiple locations.[10] Magazine Sixty reviewed Western Pink as "an important document for the times", highlighting its collage-like textures and filmic atmosphere.[11] The album has circulated within experimental and independent music contexts, including a dedicated broadcast on dublab and mention in a New Dada Music staff picks list.[19][20]
Film
Matick directed the short film ANNE FILM, based on nine prompts he sent to American poet Anne Waldman, whose responses were filmed and recorded by Ambrose Bye.[12][21] The work is held in the Anne Waldman video archive, which presents it as a document of its moment and as part of Waldman's Fast Speaking Music lineage.[12] Matick lists ANNE FILM alongside other short works on his official site, including pieces connected to his books and sound work.[21]
Fashion collaborations
Matick wrote a "speedbeat" poem used as text and voiceover for fashion label Winnie New York's FW24 runway show, filmed at the American Library in Paris.[13][14] The collaboration connects his writing to contemporary fashion imagery and to an Anglophone institution in Paris that also holds his books.[6][13]
During his time with Girlyboi, Matick also appeared in fashion-adjacent editorial and campaign contexts, with coverage in titles such as Billboard, Flaunt and C-Heads noting the duo's movement between modelling, performance and recorded music.[16][17][18]
