Jon Fombonne is an American attorney, who is the County Attorney for Harris County, Texas, the 3rd most populous county in the United States.[1]
Early life and career
Fombonne attended Swarthmore College and law school at University of Michigan.[2] He clerked for Solomon Oliver Jr. and practiced law in New York (state) and Texas before becoming Christian Menefee's deputy county attorney and first assisstant county attorney.[3]
Harris County Attorney
Fombonne was appointed unanimously by Harris County's Commissioners to replace Menefee, who had resigned to run in a special election for the U.S. House of Representatives after the death of Representative Sylvester Turner.[4][5] Fombonne was formally sworn in on January 14, 2026.[6]
On the day Fombonne was appointed County Attorney, Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened to take over Harris County elections, stating that it was "a repeat violator of election integrity." Fombonnne responded that the governor had no authority to seize control of the county's elections.[7][8]
On February 26th, 2026, the 15th Court of Appeals rejected Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's attempt to end Harris County's legal aid program for undocumented immigrants. Paxton had called the program 'wicked' and while Fombonne noted that the program had 'operated responsibly for years and continues to serve a legitimate public purpose.' [9]
