Joel David Zehr (born May 10, 1983) is an American musician and YouTuber, best known as the co-founder of the YouTube channel Mr. Kate. He was also the drummer of the power pop band The Click Five.

Early life

Zehr was born in Indianapolis, Indiana,[1] on May 10, 1983.[2] Zehr began playing drums in the fourth grade and formed a band with his brother who played guitar. He grew up in a musical family, where his dad owned a diner theater, which Zehr would spend there every day watching bands perform.[3] Zehr and childhood friend and former bandmate Eric Dill played in a band called Panagia while they were attending high school. After high school, he moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music while remaining in contact with Dill, occasionally playing for Dill's second band, Animo.[4] He was also a part of emo group, For Reasons Unseen.[5] At Berklee, Zehr majored in production/engineering and business.[6]

Career

Zehr joined members Ben Romans and Joe Guese with Ethan Mentzer in Allston and moved into their Imrie house, forming The Click Five in 2003.[6] They soon recruited Dill on lead vocals completing their line-up.[6] The group released their debut studio album Greetings from Imrie House on August 16, 2005.[7] Their second studio album, Modern Minds and Pastimes was released on June 26, 2007, with new lead vocalist Kyle Patrick who replaced Dill.[8] They released their third studio album, TCV in North America on May 17, 2011.[9] In 2013, the group announced that they were breaking up.[10] In December 2024, it was announced that The Click Five would be returning and is set to perform at Playback Music Festival on May 8, 2025, with Boys Like Girls and Secondhand Serenade, however Zehr and Romans would not be returning to the band due to scheduling conflicts.[11]

In 2007, Zehr starred in Taking Five along with his bandmates.[12] In 2009, he helped co-create the YouTube channel Mr. Kate, alongside his wife, Kate Albrecht.[13]

Musical influences and technique

Zehr grew up listening to rock music such as Nirvana and a little bit of soul music.[3] When he started getting into drumming, he idolized Dave Weckl. He credits his high school music teacher, Dane Clark as the "best teacher" he had, who helped him about "supporting the song." Zehr would drum along to Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.[3] His setup consists of Remo drumheads, Vater sticks and Sabian cymbals.[3]

Personal life

Zehr began dating Kate Albrecht in 2006, after meeting on the set of Taking Five.[14] They got married in 2013.
