Jason "Jay" Fitzgerald is an American drummer best known as a founding member of the Massachusetts metalcore band Overcast, widely regarded as one of the pioneering acts of the modern metalcore genre.[1] Active since the early 1990s, Fitzgerald has remained a fixture in the New England heavy-music scene, later performing with bands including Tunnel Drill and Acaro.[2]
Early career and Overcast
Fitzgerald co-founded Overcast in August 1991 alongside Brian Fair (vocals), Mike D'Antonio (bass), Pete Cortese (guitar), and Scott McCooe (guitar).[3] Emerging from the Massachusetts hardcore and thrash scenes, Overcast became known for blending the aggression of hardcore punk with the precision of thrash metal, helping define the early metalcore movement.[4]
During the 1990s the group issued several independent recordings, including Bleed Into One (1992), Expectational Dilution (1994), and Fight Ambition to Kill (1997).[1] After years of touring and label challenges, the band disbanded in 1998. Members later joined or founded influential acts such as Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and Seemless.[3]
Reunion and Reborn to Kill Again
In 2006, Fitzgerald reunited with the original Overcast lineup to re-record classic and unreleased material for Reborn to Kill Again, produced by Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage and released by Metal Blade Records in 2008.[5] The release reintroduced the band to a new generation and highlighted Overcast’s influence on later metalcore acts.[4]
Work with Acaro
Following the Overcast reunion, Fitzgerald joined Acaro, a Boston-based group that mixed thrash and modern metalcore. Fronted by Chris Harrell (formerly of Burn in Silence), the band released its debut album The Disease of Fear in 2011 to regional acclaim.[2] Acaro’s sound was noted for combining technical precision with old-school metal energy.[6][7] The band appeared at regional events including the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival.
Other projects
Fitzgerald has also played with Tunnel Drill and collaborated with The Empire Shall Fall, a project featuring Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage.[8]
Legacy
As a founding member of Overcast, Fitzgerald is often cited among the early drummers who shaped New England’s metalcore movement, blending hardcore’s urgency with thrash’s rhythmic complexity.[2] His career connects the underground 1990s scene with the globally recognized acts that followed.
