Jane Marsh is an American operatic soprano and recitalist. She was the first vocalist to win the Gold Medal[1] at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the year that the vocal category was introduced.
Early life and education
Marsh was born in San Francisco, California. She studied voice at Oberlin College and Conservatory with Ellen Repp and Ludwig Weber.[citation needed] While still a student, she was invited by the White House to represent the United States at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.[1]
Career
Marsh's first professional appearance was in 1966, when she was signed by Erich Leinsdorf to sing Beethoven's Ninth in Boston. The next year, she won first place in the vocal competition of the third International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.[2] Marsh made her European operatic debut as Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, under conductor Thomas Schippers. Her American operatic debut followed with the role of Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the San Francisco Opera.[3]

Publications
Marsh is the author of a book of anecdotes and has compiled three anthologies of music, including Spirit Be Joyful, published by Oxford University Press in 2008[5].
