James Merry (born 30 July 1982) is an English actor.

Early life and education

The only son of Christina and Michael Merry, he began acting at the age of 10 with the Birmingham Television Workshop. Merry attended Bishop Vesey's Grammar School in Sutton Coldfield. He studied at the Guildford School of Acting, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and receiving the "Experts Choice" award from The Stage newspaper for his showcase performances in 2005.

Career

As a child, Merry appeared in the television series The Demon Headmaster and presented articles on Saturday morning children's show Scratchy & Co. He is best known for his portrayal of bad boy Danny Ogbourne in the BBC medical soap opera Doctors. He has also appeared in the ITV drama Where the Heart Is, ITV sitcom Birds of a Feather, the Inspector Morse prequel, playing Percy Malleson.[1]

On stage he played the title role in Oliver! as a child at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham. In 2007, he appeared in a production of The Glass Tower, directed by Jessica Swale at The Pleasance Theatre, Islington. In 2009, he completed a nationwide theatre tour of Jane Austen's Emma with Heartbreak Productions, taking the role of George Knightley. Between 2021 and 2024 he starred in the Pantomimes Dick Whittington, Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford.[2][3][4]

Since 2018, he has appeared in the CBeebies BAFTA nominated comedy Waffle The Wonder Dog, playing Simon Brooklyn-Bell. In 2025 he reprised the role in the spin off show Waffles After School Club. [5][6][7][8][9]

Personal life

Merry lives in Guildford, Surrey with his partner and their three children. He is an avid supporter of Aston Villa F.C.[10]
