Career

Nuisance Bear (2021 short)

In 2021, Weisman co-directed the short documentary Nuisance Bear with Gabriela Osio Vanden. The film follows polar bears navigating the town of Churchill, Manitoba during peak tourism season and was widely noted for departing from conventional wildlife-documentary framing.[2]

At the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, the film received an Honourable Mention in the IMDbPro Short Cuts Awards.[3]

The short received significant industry recognition. It won **Best Short Documentary** at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards.[4] According to POV Magazine, the film received three Critics Choice Documentary Award nominations, the most ever for a short film at the ceremony.[4]

It also won **Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Short Filmmaking** at the 2023 Cinema Eye Honors.[5]

The film was nominated at the International Documentary Association (IDA) Awards and received an Honourable Mention for the Pare Lorentz Award.[4]

It was shortlisted for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards.[6]

Nuisance Bear (2026 feature)

Weisman and Osio Vanden expanded the short into a feature-length documentary, Nuisance Bear, which premiered in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.[7]

The feature won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Documentary category.[1]

Critical coverage described the film as immersive and unconventional in its approach to wildlife and climate storytelling.[8][9]
