IJland Studio is a recording studio located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

History

IJland Studio is located in the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam, where from 1903 the South America Line, later Royal Holland Lloyd, transported emigrants and seasonal workers to South America. Initially from Spain and Portugal, and later primarily from Eastern Europe. Before the workers could move into the adjacent emigrant hotel to await embarkation, they had to have themselves and their clothes removed of fleas and lice in the 'Ontsmettingsgebouw' (disinfection building), the same building where IJland Studio is now located.[1]

In the 1980s there was a large squatter movement in Amsterdam,[2] some of whom moved into the basement of the old quarantine building and started to build a studio with materials from the Salvation Army. The studio opened in 1985 as Studio Zwembad (swimming pool), due to frequent flooding problems. Once the water issue were solved, it was renamed to IJland Studio.[3]

The famous Dutch punk band De Raggende Manne led by Bob Fosko recorded their first two albums 5 Sessies & Knuppelhout at the studio between 1986 and 1990, including the single Fok Me Niet Op!, and a video taken by Vera Jong shows the band playing the song live in the studio[4][5][6][7]

In 1993 Evert Kaatee took over as owner and he brought in such artists as Boyd Small, The Seatsniffers, and Bettie Serveert.[8][9][10]

In 2005 Evert passed ownership to Remko Schouten[11], who was well known as the FOH engineer for the US alt-rock band Pavement[12] and would later continue working with them in the studio through drummer Steve West and frontman Stephen Malkmus.

in 2010 rapper 50 Cent secretly recorded a song at the studio while staying in the Netherlands.[13]

In 2012 Steve West with his project Marble Valley produced their album Breakthrough at the studio.[14][15][16]

In 2014 Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks mixed their album Wig Out at Jagbags at the studio.[17]

in 2017 Malkmus worked in the studio to produce the debut album of Canshaker Pi who would then reform as the band Personal Trainer, and later recorded several tracks for their album Big Love Blanket.[18]

Other notable artists that worked at the studio during this period include Boo Boo Davis, and Kai Strauss.[19]

In 2022 Gorillaz recorded parts of the album Cracker Island at the studio, including the song Tormenta engineered with studio co-owner Tim Visser, who took sole ownership in 2024 following the departure of Remko Schouten.[20][21][22]

In 2022 Nijmegen indie band Misprint recorded their EP 'Binnenkant van een raam' at the studio, & 'Binnenkant van een raam', and the Amsterdam band Hang Youth recorded their album 'ALLES MOET BETER' and also live streamed the release show from IJland.[23][24][25]
