Draft:IBreastBook

iBreastBook is an international online breast-surgery education platform that provides free webinars on breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, oncoplastic breast surgery, reconstructive techniques, oncology and multidisciplinary practice. The initiative was founded by consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon Yazan Masannat in the United Kingdom.[1] The webinars include speakers from a range of breast-care specialties and are attended by clinicians and trainees in several countries.[2]

The educational role of iBreastBook and similar collaborative platforms has been discussed in peer-reviewed literature on online breast-surgery education, where these platforms have been described as a way of providing expert-led learning to an international audience of surgeons and trainees.[3][4]

Overview

The iBreastBook platform hosts live online webinars that are free to access. Sessions are aimed at healthcare professionals involved in breast disease management, including breast surgeons, plastic surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, specialist nurses and trainees.[5] Recordings of many sessions are published online.[6]

Topics commonly include early and advanced breast cancer management, oncoplastic breast-conserving procedures, mastectomy and reconstruction, axillary surgery, breast imaging, pathology and multidisciplinary decision-making.[5]

History

The iBreastBook platform was established in the late 2010s.[1] Its activities expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, when virtual teaching became widely used within medical education.[3]

The Mammary Fold, a United Kingdom trainee organisation in oncoplastic breast surgery, has highlighted iBreastBook as a free educational resource for surgeons and trainees.[2]

Role in online medical education

Peer-reviewed commentary has described iBreastBook as one of several collaborative online breast-surgery learning platforms that support continuing professional development through webinar-based teaching and discussion.[3][4] These platforms have been described as helping to overcome limitations of face-to-face teaching by allowing wider participation from multiple countries.[3]

The same review literature refers to large-scale collaborative events such as the 24-hour international meeting “Breastics24h”, organised jointly by iBreastBook and professional organisations involved in breast surgery.[3]

Audience and participation

The webinars are primarily used by surgeons and other clinicians working in breast services.[5] Sessions usually include case-based talks or lectures followed by moderated questions and discussion.[6]

Organisation

iBreastBook is organised by a small faculty with invited speakers. It operates independently of formal professional societies, although speakers and participants may be affiliated with them.[1]

Reception

Peer-reviewed literature has described iBreastBook and related platforms as contributing to wider access to specialist education in breast surgery, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.[3][4]

In a 2023 United Kingdom survey of breast trainees, iBreastBook was reported as one of the most frequently used educational resources, along with publications from the Association of Breast Surgery and guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).[7]

Independent specialist education websites such as the Best of Breast Resource also list iBreastBook as a learning resource for breast surgeons.[8]
