Hrishikesh Dattatreya Pai (born 9 February 1960) is an Indian gynaecologist, obstetrician and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) specialist. He served as the 61st president of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) from 2022 to 2023,[1][2] and is the founder and medical director of the Bloom IVF Group, which operates IVF centres across India.[3] He is a Regional Trustee for Asia–Oceania at the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).[4]
Pai is credited with introducing several assisted reproductive technologies in India, including assisted laser hatching, oocyte cryopreservation, ovarian tissue freezing and intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI).[1][3] In 2019, he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship ad eundem by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London.[3][4]
Early life and education
Pai was born on 9 February 1960 in Maharashtra, India. He completed his MD in obstetrics and gynaecology from Seth G. S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, University of Mumbai, in 1985, where he was awarded a gold medal.[3][5] In 1987 he held an ICMR research fellowship in ultrasound at the BYL Nair Hospital and TN Medical College, Mumbai.[3] He undertook a clinical fellowship in reproductive biology at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, in 1989–1990, and later completed a Master of Science in clinical embryology at the Jones Institute, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, in 2006.[3][5]
Career
After his fellowship in Melbourne, Pai began practising assisted reproductive technology in India in 1991.[1] He is the founder and medical director of the Bloom IVF Group, which operates multiple IVF centres in cities including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, New Delhi, Gurugram and Mohali.[3][5] He practises as a consultant gynaecologist at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.[5]
Pai has held an honorary adjunct assistant professorship in clinical embryology and andrology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, USA, until April 2023, and serves as professor of reproductive medicine at D. Y. Patil University, Navi Mumbai.[3][4]
Pioneering procedures
Several assisted reproductive technologies are reported to have been introduced to India by Pai, including assisted laser hatching, spindle view, ovarian tissue freezing, oocyte cryopreservation and IMSI.[1][2][5] In 2012 he introduced time-lapse embryo imaging (the Embryoscope) in Asia.[3]
Society leadership
Pai was installed as the 61st president of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) on 22 October 2022, succeeding S. Shantha Kumari, and served the 2022–2023 term.[1][2][6] As president, he launched the "Badlaav" campaign on women's health advocacy and the "Freedom from Anemia" roadshow.[3][6]
He has also served as president of the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society (2008–2009), the Indian Association of Gynaecological Endoscopists and the Maharashtra Chapter of ISAR.[3][4] Internationally, he is a Regional Trustee for Asia–Oceania at FIGO and was a board member of the International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS).[4] He is a member of the steering committee of the World Health Organization Global Summit on postpartum haemorrhage.[4]
Pai is chief administrator of FOGSI's Manyata programme, an initiative for upgrading maternal care quality in private hospitals, run in partnership with MSD for Mothers, the MacArthur Foundation and Jhpiego.[4]
