Reception

Cheryl Eddy of io9 felt that the film's "wacky execution and off-kilter choices" are its "true selling points", praising the special effecrs, the editing, the "extremely cartoonish" performances and the depiction of sharks.[1] Pelin Çılgın of EasternKicks rated the film 4 stars out of 5 and felt that while it "briefly loses momentum", it "rebounds with enough onsen nonsense to satisfy cult cinema fans." They proclaimed it "destined for cult classic status, soaked in blood, bath, and bloodbath."[2] Chad Collins of Dread Central rated the film 3.5/5 stars, considering it "glorious, practical cheese" and a "practically driven, balls-to-the-wall shark spectacular."[3] Luiz H. C. of Bloody Disgusting gave the film a 3.5/5 score. He criticised the lack of "solid ground rules" for the sharks, though he noted that most of the film's "limitations come off as charming rather than grating due to the simple fact that the cast and crew were clearly having a great time."[4] Del Winters of MovieJawn opined that while the film is "slightly let down by uneven pacing, disappearing characters, and a too-familiar shark monster story", the "practical effects, snappy camerawork, and over-the-top performances still work well enough together to guarantee a fun time."[5]

Hannah Gearan of Screen Rant rated the film 5/10 stars, writing that while it has a "sophomoric feel that seems less stylistic and more unsophisticated", its "boldness helps craft an entertaining ride that is incredibly zany."[6] Jennie Kermode of Eye for Film rated the film 2.5/5 stars, opining that it "hangs together remarkably well" and that it has a "freshness to it that makes it a great appetiser for a feast of films to come." She recommended it to those who are "up for a bit of fishy fun" as opposed to those "looking for a serious thriller".[7] Liz Braun of Original Cin gave the film a 'C' rating and felt that while it is "initially quite a lark", it ultimately "boasts not much more than a goofy premise and amusingly terrible special effects."[8] Julian Roman of MovieWeb was much more critical, giving it a 1.5/5 star rating. He felt that the film's "greatest flaw" is that there is "never a point where the filmmakers want the audience invested in any of the characters". However, he lauded the film's climax and felt that Inoue "deserves a golf clap for sticking to his guns, delivering puerile glory in an ending that actually nudges the film's one-star rating higher by the sheer magnitude of its cinematic silliness."[9]
