Rev Dr. Helen Elizabeth Jacobi MNZM is an Anglican priest. She became the first woman to serve as a cathedral dean in New Zealand when she became dean of St John's Cathedral, Napier in 2004. In 2014, she became the first female vicar of St Matthew-in-the-City in central Auckland. In 2020, Jacobi was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to religion and the community.
Early life and education
Jacobi obtained a bachelor of arts, a bachelor of divinity,[1] and a diploma in social work from the University of London and a doctorate of ministry in preaching from the University of Chicago.[2]
Career
In 1996, Jacobi worked for the Women in Crisis Project in Ottawa, Canada and was responsible for their homeless shelter programme.[3]
Jacobi served as the Vicar of St Luke's Anglican Church in the Wellington suburb of Wadestown until 2004.[1][4]
In 2004, she became the first woman to appointed a cathedral dean in New Zealand, when she was appointed dean of St John's Cathedral, Napier.[1][4][5] Jacobi served in the role from 2004 to 2013.
Jacobi next served as vicar of St Matthew-in-the-City in central Auckland from 2014 to 2023, again the first woman to serve in the role.[6][5]
Awards
In the 2020 New Year’s honours, Jacobi was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the Anglican church and the community.[3][7]
Personal life
Jacobi is married to husband, Stephen.[1] The couple have two daughters.[1]
