Harper James is a UK-based law firm that focuses on providing legal services to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) [1]. The firm was founded in 2014 by Toby Harper [2].
Harper James operates a distributed working model in which many of its lawyers work remotely. The firm offers legal services through subscription-based plans as well as project-based pricing, with the aim of providing SMEs with more flexible and cost-predictable access to legal support than traditional hourly billing models.
The firm provides advice across a range of areas of business law, including corporate law, intellectual property, employment law, data protection and privacy, and commercial contracts. It emphasises the importance of blending good commercial and relationship skills with technology fluency [3].
Harper James has been recognised in legal industry rankings. In the Chambers and Partners 2026 Guide, the firm is ranked as a Band 1 firm in the SME-focused category.[4].
In 2025 Harper James took investment from LDC, the private equity arm of Lloyds Banking Group [5]
