Gustav Jacob Adt (1 July 1860 – 19 August 1922) was a German industrialist from the Adt papier-mâché dynasty and a member of the Landtag of Alsace–Lorraine.[1][2]

Early life and career

Adt was born in Ensheim, now part of Saarbrücken. He was the son of the industrialist Johann-Baptist Adt (16 May 1825, Ensheim – 15 February 1913) and his wife Maria Schwarz (born 13 October 1833).[2] He attended the lyceum and the Realgymnasium in Trier, and studied chemistry in Strasbourg, Trier, Zurich and Munich.[1][2] In 1884 he became a reserve officer, and in 1885 he entered his father's company.[1][2]

In 1902 he became general director of the firm Gebrüder Adt. By 1914 the company employed 3,300 workers.[3]

Business and political activities

In 1886, together with his father and eight other people, Adt was among the founders of the Bank of Forbach.[2]

From 1888 he was a member of the Landesausschuss of Alsace–Lorraine.[1] In 1896 he joined the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and its Pfalz–Saarbrücken district association.[4] In 1904 he was appointed a Kommerzienrat.[1]

In 1908 he became a member of the Metz Chamber of Commerce.[3] From 1912 he served on the board of the Central Association of German Industry, where he represented the Saar region and Lorraine, and he was also chairman of the Verein zur Wahrung der gemeinsamen Interessen der ostlothringischen Industrie.[3][5]

From 1911 he was a member of the First Chamber of the Landtag of Alsace–Lorraine.[1]

Personal life

Adt was married to a countess of the Zeppelin-Aschhausen family and had four children.[2]

After World War I

After Germany's defeat in the First World War, the German members of the Adt family were expropriated and expelled from the territory; all of the companies passed to the state.[2]
