Greg Koons is an American singer-songwriter and the former frontman of the Americana band Greg Koons & The Misbegotten. He is best known for his 2009 album Welcome to the Nowhere Motel, which received attention from national and international music publications including Magnet Magazine[1], PopMatters[2], Rootsy.nu[3], RootsHighway[4], the Montpelier Times Argus[5], Connect Savannah[6], and the Philadelphia Inquirer.[7] Songs from the album also received airplay on BBC Scotland[8], and the record reached No. 24 on the EuroAmericana Chart in August 2010.[9]
Early life
Koons is a native of the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area. In his teens and early twenties, he worked at the historic Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles. His time at the hotel, long associated with artists and musicians, later became part of his public biography and was referenced in international coverage of his music.[10]
He lived at various times in Los Angeles, Nashville, and Florida before returning to central Pennsylvania. In the 1990s, he performed with the regional rock band Bad Cat Friday, which received local attention.[11]
Music career
Welcome to the Nowhere Motel
Koons created Greg Koons & The Misbegotten in the late 2000s. Many of the songs for Welcome to the Nowhere Motel were written in a rented garage unit at a U‑Haul self‑storage facility in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.[12]
The album was recorded in December 2007 in Los Angeles and co-produced by singer-songwriter Matt Keating and producer Adam Lasus. Critics noted the presence of a seasoned backing band, including bassist Jason Mercer (Ani DiFranco, Ron Sexsmith), drummer Jordan Richardson (Ben Harper & Relentless7), guitarist Kirk Swan (Dumptruck), and Duane Jarvis, who contributed dobro in one of his final recording sessions.[13]
The album was released on June 23, 2009, on Kealon Records. It later reached No. 24 on the EuroAmericana Chart in August 2010.[14] Tracks from the album were also broadcast on BBC Scotland.[15]
Koons did not release a follow-up album, and Welcome to the Nowhere Motel remains his only full-length recording.
Critical reception
The Philadelphia Inquirer described Koons as an "alt-country craftsman".[16]
Magnet Magazine included Welcome to the Nowhere Motel in its list of the Top 10 Americana Albums of 2009.[17]
PopMatters also ranked the album among the Top 10 Americana Albums of 2009, praising its “narrative detail” and “strong sense of place.”[18]
In Sweden, Rootsy.nu critic Rune Häger wrote that the album “should have had more success,” adding that supporters of American roots music “should know about it.”[19]
In Italy, RootsHighway critic Davide Albini wrote that the album had received “almost unanimous approval” from music journalists and described Koons as having “a really interesting biography,” citing his years working at the Chateau Marmont, his time traveling across the United States, and his struggles with epilepsy while touring. Albini reported that Koons “suffer[ed] severe seizures,” a condition he had lived with since his mid‑twenties, and wrote that Koons had at one point lost his bearings during a tour and had to be assisted by his father, a Vietnam veteran.[20]
In the Montpelier Times Argus, critic Art Edelstein wrote that Koons’ songwriting explored “the bleaker side of life,” including economic hardship and strained relationships.[21]
Connect Savannah critic Jim Reed described Koons’ style as “jangly, barroom laments and observational slices-of-life… gritty and sweet at once,” calling the album “meticulously descriptive and vaguely cinematic.”[22]
Festival appearances
Koons performed at several music festivals, including:
Academic and research work
After stepping back from full-time music, Koons began working with University of Pennsylvania professor James McGann as part of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP). He contributed research and program support and was acknowledged in McGann’s 2017 book Think Tanks and Emerging Power Policy Networks, published by Palgrave Macmillan.[26]
