Biography

Grant Verstandig was born circa 1989.[1] He was raised in Washington D.C. Verstandig's parents both worked in federal government.[2] He graduated high school from Landon School.[2] He had frequent injuries from competitive sports.[2] He decided to become a doctor and registered for the pre-med program at Brown University.[2] He majored in neurobiology and played on the lacrosse team.[1] Verstandig got a knee injury that forced him to resign from lacrosse.[1][2] Around the same time, one of his parents was diagnosed with cancer.[2] His experiences with healthcare prompted him to drop out of college during his sophomore year in April 2010, to create a startup in Washington D.C. originally called Audax.[1][2][3]

The business focused on comparing prices from medical providers and incentivizing employees to adopt healthy habits.[3] UnitedHealth acquired a majority stake in Audax in 2014.[4] In 2017, UnitedHealth acquired the rest of Audax,[2] merged it with UnitedHealth's "Rally Health" brand, and appointed Verstandig as Chief Digital Officer of UnitedHealth.[3][4] Verstandig left the position with UnitedHealth in 2021 to become a venture capitalist.[4] He co-founded the venture capital firm Red Cell Partners, which focuses on early seed investments in healthcare and national security.[2]
