Good Ass Job is the upcoming collaborative studio album by American rappers Kanye West and Chance the Rapper. The album was announced by West on September 17, 2018 at an open mic event in their hometown of Chicago.[1]
Background
When West was working on his planned education-themed tetralogy, the fourth installment was developed under the title Good Ass Job. However, the third installment Graduation (2007) was instead followed by the release of 808s & Heartbreak (2008).[2] West again began working on Good Ass Job, with GOOD Music artist Big Sean announcing the title.[3] In July 2010, West announced that the title would no longer be Good Ass Job[4] and the project ended up becoming My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010).[5]
As an early artist, Chance always saw fellow Chicagoan artist Kanye West as a great influence on him.[6] On his second mixtape, Acid Rap (2013), the track "Good Ass Intro" was titled after the then-cancelled Good Ass Job and featured a sample from West's Get Well Soon mixtape.[7] The final track was similarly titled "Everything's Good (Good Ass Outro)".
Chance and West began collaborating in late 2015, with Chance lending guest vocals and bringing in his bandmate Nico Segal to play trumpets for the track "Ultralight Beam" off the album The Life of Pablo (2016). Chance was also a co-writer on several other tracks from the album, including "Father Stretch My Hands", "Famous", "Feedback", and "Waves". Chance wanting to finalize the recording for the track "Waves" also caused The Life of Pablo to be delayed.[8] West would later appear as a guest artist on the opening track "All We Got" along with the Chicago Children's Choir from Chance's third mixtape Coloring Book (2016).
In May 2016, soon after the release of Coloring Book, Chance expressed interest in reviving Good Ass Job with West.[7] In June 2018, Chance announced that he was going to work with West on a seven-track album similar to the Wyoming Sessions albums released in May–June 2018.[9] On September 15, 2018, Chance uploaded a text post to Instagram that simply read "Good Ass Job".[1] On September 17, Chance posted a video to Instagram, showing him and Kanye on stage, confirming the release of this album.[10]
