Glanadda is a residential suburb of Bangor in Gwynedd, North West Wales.[1] The area is located 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest of the city centre.
History
Glanadda was built primarily during the late 19th and mid-20th centuries.[2] The roads surrounding it, such as Penrhos Road, remained largely rural until the mid-20th century. Following the Second World War, a major residential expansion occurred during the 1940s and 1950s, leading to the construction of postwar semi-detached and detached housing estates.[3]
The Glanadda Cemetery[4][5] contains numerous Commonwealth War Graves and is home to the Bangor War Memorial. The area is also home to the former St David's Church[6][7], located on Caernarfon Road and opposite the Glanadda Cemetery. The church was consecrated in 1888 and was built as a memorial to Henry Thomas Edwards, the-then Dean of Bangor, who died in 1884. It closed as an active place of worship in 2014[8], following rising costs and dwindling congregation numbers. It has since been left vacant and is currently awaiting conversion for other uses.[9]
Geography
Glanadda lies southwest of Bangor's historic city centre. It occupies a geographic corridor bounded by the main Caernarfon Road to the north and lies close to the residential suburbs of Penrhosgarnedd and Coedmawr. The district is characterised by a mix of traditional Victorian terraced housing along and mid-20th century residential estates.[10]
Education
The main primary education in Glanadda was centered at Ysgol Glanadda, which was located on Caernarfon Road.[11] Founded in the late 19th century, it was a council-run primary school.[12]
As part of a £12.7 million investment and restructuring of primary education within the Bangor catchment area by Gwynedd Council, Ysgol Glanadda closed on the 31st August 2020.[13] Students were relocated to alternative educational facilities, and to a new school that had opened nearby with higher capacity and more modern needs.[14] The historic Victorian school building was subsequently approved for redevelopment.[15]
Transport
The primary road through Glanadda is Caernarfon Road (A4087), which is a major commuter route between Bangor and Caernarfon. Also located nearby is the A55 road (North Wales Expressway).
Regular buses connect Glanadda to Bethesda, Bangor and Caernarfon. These are operated by Arriva Wales and Gwynfor Coaches.[16] The nearest railway station is in Bangor.
Other connections close to Glanadda are to the neighbouring Isle of Anglesey, via both the Britannia Bridge and the Menai Suspension Bridge.
