Comment: This looks to be flying between a company article, the basis of this review, and the personal lives of the owners. But for companies the notability requirement is for corporate depth, and there is insufficient coverage of that here. See WP:SIRS and the corporate depth section below. Galactic Fireworks is a British fireworks retailer based in South Yorkshire, England. The company was founded in 1999 by Nigel Turver and operates three retail showrooms in Dinnington, Retford, and Ripley, alongside an online store offering nationwide delivery.[1]
History
Nigel Turver developed an interest in fireworks as a child in Sheffield during the 1970s, and later sold fireworks from his family's grocery store in Laughton Common, near Dinnington.[2] He formally established Galactic Fireworks in 1999, naming the company after Standard Fireworks' "Galactic Star" selection box.[2] The company initially operated as a mail-order service launched in time for the Millennium celebrations, sending out brochures by post and taking phone orders.[1]
Galactic Fireworks operates as a trading division of Turvers Limited (company number 04464444), the family-owned holding company.[3] The business was an early adopter of e-commerce, launching an online store in the early 2000s, which allowed it to attract customers from across the United Kingdom.[2] A related company, Galactic Fireworks Display Team Limited (company number 08483801), was incorporated on 17 April 2013 to handle professional display services.[4]
Turver's sons James and Harry grew up working in the business and joined the company full-time.[2] In 2011, Nigel and James visited Liuyang, China, a major centre for firework manufacturing, and the company subsequently began importing its own branded range.[2] The company is an associate member of the British Fireworks Association.[5]
Operations
Galactic Fireworks stocks consumer fireworks from manufacturers including Bright Star, Evolution Fireworks, Primed Pyrotechnics, Brothers Pyrotechnics, and Celtic Fireworks. The range covers consumer fireworks classified as F2 (garden use, 8-metre safety distance) and F3 (display use, 25-metre safety distance) under the Pyrotechnic Articles (Safety) Regulations 2015.
The company operates three retail showrooms:
- Dinnington, Sheffield (12-14 Hangsman Lane, S25 3PF)
- Retford, Nottinghamshire (8 Grove Street, DN22 6JR)
- Ripley, Derbyshire (54 Oxford Street, DE5 3AP)
The company's related entity, Galactic Fireworks Display Team Limited, provides professional firework display services for events and community celebrations.
In popular culture
Founder Nigel Turver, known as "Supercar Nigel" for his collection of Porsche sports cars, appeared in the Channel 5 documentary series Britain's Flashiest Families.[6] He was featured in Season 1, Episode 4, which aired on 1 January 2015.[7]
In April 2026, Turver appeared on the Channel 5 documentary series Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday, in Season 6 Episode 3, which aired on 26 April 2026.[8][9] The episode contrasted his family's holiday with that of a single mother and son in Fuerteventura.
