Frank Meo (born 1957) is an American photography agent, advocate, and media professional. He is the founder of PROJECTIONS, a photography-focused media and discussion platform, and is known for his work representing photojournalists and commercial photographers, as well as his involvement as a speaker, judge, and nominator within the photography industry.[1][2]

Early life

Frank Meo was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957.

Career

Meo began his career in the advertising industry in 1977, working as a projectionist at the agency Levine Huntley Schmidt Plapler & Beaver. In 1979, he joined Ally & Gargano, where he worked within the American advertising industry.

In 1985, Meo founded Meo Represents, a photography agency representing photojournalists and commercial photographers. Artists represented by the agency have included Ron Haviv, Donna Ferrato, Robert Ammirati, Ron Levine, James Salzano, Deanne Fitzmaurice, and Nancy Borowick.

Meo later expanded his work into education, consulting, and professional advocacy, contributing articles and interviews on photography business practices to industry publications including Resource Magazine, AI-AP (American Illustration & American Photography), and PhotoShelter.

He also developed ThePhotoCloser.com, a platform focused on mentoring and career development for photographers.

PROJECTIONS

Meo is the founder and host of PROJECTIONS, a moderated photography platform and event series that presents documentary and fine-art photography through presentations and discussions with photographers and industry professionals.[3]

The series has featured photographers whose work includes coverage of the White House and recipients of Pulitzer Prizes. Participants have included David Hume Kennerly, David Burnett, Sharon Farmer, Peter Turnley, Deborah Feingold, Pete Souza, Donna Ferrato, Elliott Landy, Eric Draper, and Linda Troeller.

PROJECTIONS has also hosted thematic programming addressing contemporary issues such as the war in Ukraine, gun violence in the United States, the COVID-19 pandemic, and abortion rights in the United States, featuring photojournalists presenting documentary work and firsthand reporting.

Speaking and teaching

Meo has spoken at academic institutions including Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, The New School, Parsons School of Design, the International Center of Photography (ICP), and the School of Visual Arts (SVA). He has also lectured for professional organizations such as the Eddie Adams Workshop, the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), and the American Photographic Artists (APA).

He has presented workshops on creative business practices and professional development for photographers to international audiences.

Awards and professional service

Meo has served as a nominator for the International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Awards and has been a judge for photography competitions including the Tokyo International Foto Awards, American Photography, PDN Photo Contest, Siena Photo Awards, Xposure Awards, Moscow Photography Awards, and the Lucie Awards. He has also received multiple nominations for Lucie Awards.
