Frances Fraser was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1830 or 1832,[1] but lived most of her life in Nottingham.[2] She was a 'lace-finisher' and her sister and her mother also worked in the lace trade, and on the census of 1851, both sisters were unmarried and Frances had a two months old child named Edward.[3] By 1861, there are another two children for Frances, William and Mary, whose father was unnamed, according to their baptismal records (July 18th 1861).[4] Frances Fraser had become a business woman by 1885, as she was listed as head of household on the 1871 census with "income derived dividends"[5] and she is listed as owning a business in White's trade directory.[6] By 1881 Frances remained as head of household and there is evidence of six children,[7] previously mentioned Edward and second son, William (or Frederick William) were solicitors, another son Arthur, was Curate of Farnsfield, Nottingham, two daughters, Mary and Annie and there was a younger son, Hugh[8] Frances' eldest child, Edward (1851–1921) subsequently became Sir Edward Henry Fraser, Councillor, Lord mayor, Sheriff, and Solicitor of Nottingham.[9] Frances Fraser died January 25, 1889, and was buried in Nottingham,[10] leaving in her will an estate set as £1, 641 (£176,664.38 today)[11]
