Samuel Colt's patent on his revolver design had, for many years, effectively prevented all other manufacturers (besides Colt) from manufacturing their own revolvers. The expiration of Colt's patent in 1857 allowed other companies to competitively manufacture revolvers. Soon after, E. Remington & Sons began manufacturing the Remington Model 1858 (also known as the "Remington-Beals" revolver), which was designed by Beals. Remington and the company shared 1856 and 1857 patents related to the firearm. Beals would maintain his relationship with the company for many years, designing many of its most successful firearms.[1]
