Fear Screen is an international horror film festival based in Middlesbrough, England, in the North East of the United Kingdom. It is the only dedicated international horror film festival in the North East of England, curated by professionals with experience in high-end television and major studio film productions.[1] The festival is listed on the British Council UK Films & Festivals database.[2]
History
Fear Screen held its inaugural launch event on 29–31 October 2025 at Roxy Movies, Middlesbrough, to a sellout crowd of filmmakers and audience members.[3]
In April 2026, Fear Screen hosted a charity screening of Red Riding, the debut feature from North East-born filmmaker and actor Craig Conway, at Roxy Movies, Middlesbrough. The film had world-premiered at FrightFest Glasgow in March 2026. The event included a live Q&A with Conway and producer-DOP Daniel Patrick Vaughan, with all proceeds donated to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), a UK suicide prevention charity.[4][5] Red Riding stars Victoria Tait alongside Ian Whyte and Robert Cavanah, was produced and shot by Daniel Patrick Vaughan, and executive produced by Neil Marshall.[6]
The 2026 festival is scheduled to run from 30 October to 12 November 2026 at Roxy Movies, Middlesbrough, with a black-tie gala awards ceremony on 13 November 2026.[7]
Format and programming
Fear Screen accepts horror and horror sub-genre films of all lengths — from short films to feature-length productions — from filmmakers worldwide, with no budget threshold.[8] Film submissions are accepted via FilmFreeway.[9] The festival presents awards across multiple categories including filmmaking, direction, performance, and cinematography.[10]
The festival also runs the 48 Hours Later filmmaking challenge, a free-to-enter competition in which participants must write, shoot, and edit a short horror film within 48 hours based on a set prompt revealed at the start of the challenge. Completed films are screened alongside feature presentations at Roxy Movies.[11]
Venue
The festival is held at Roxy Movies, located at Captain Cook Square, Newport Crescent, Middlesbrough.[12]
