EssentiallySports is a digital sports media publisher founded in 2014. It publishes sports news and editorial content and operates primarily as a U.S.-focused publisher. The company has been described as a bootstrapped digital media startup that has grown to more than one million newsletter subscribers and has received coverage from Sports Illustrated for its original NIL-focused content series featuring college athletes.[1][2]
History
EssentiallySports began as a project created by its founders, by Harit Pathak, Jaskirat Arora, and Suryansh Tibarewal, while they were university students. The founders initially funded the project with approximately $100 for their domain name and early operating costs.[1][2][3] EssentiallySports has offices worldwide and operates in the United States under the registered name, EssentiallySports Media, Inc., as a domestic general corporation formed on November 14, 2025.[4][5]
In 2019, coverage tied to the U.S. Open generated a significant traffic increase that influenced the company’s editorial direction.[1] During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company expanded its publishing output and experienced audience growth as it broadened its sports coverage.[6]
In 2026, EssentiallySports introduced a brand redesign led by designer Martin Grasser, aimed at creating a more consistent and enduring editorial identity. According to Print magazine, the update focused on a modular visual system and a shift away from a speed-driven publishing model toward greater clarity and long-term brand cohesion.[7]
Distribution and audience
EssentiallySports expanded by building coverage in sports and fandoms, including the NFL, NBA, NASCAR, UFC, college football, and the WNBA.[1] The company has reported a newsletter audience of over one million subscribers.[2][3]
Newsletters are a major distribution channel for EssentiallySports. The company operates multiple sport-specific newsletters with a subscriber base exceeding 1 million, with additional reporting citing a combined newsletter audience across multiple titles.[8][3] EssentiallySports uses Beehiiv as its newsletter platform, and has expanded its subscribers using a "zero-CAC" model.[9]
In early 2024, EssentiallySports launched “Lucky Dog on Track,” a NASCAR-focused newsletter and brand extension.[10]
Creator and athlete collaborations
EssentiallySports works with outside creators, including athletes, to produce content tied to major sports events. In a 2025 campaign tied to the WNBA All-Star Game, the company tracked newsletter engagement metrics, including open rates and click-through rates. Compensation and usage terms vary by deal.[11]
In December 2025, EssentiallySports launched an NIL-focused series with University of Florida athletes Me’Arah O’Neal and K’Nisha Godfrey, with plans to expand to additional colleges in 2026.[12]
