Equator Coffees is a women-owned and LGBTQ-owned coffee roaster based in San Rafael, California, founded by Helen Russell and Brooke McDonnell in 1995..[1][2][3]. A part of the third-wave coffee movement, Equator helped to pioneer the direct trade model as one of the first coffee companies to sell Fair Trade certified coffee[4][5][6]. In 2011, they also became the first California coffee roaster to become a certified B Corp for their commitments to environmental impact, ethics, and supply chain transparency[7][8].

Since 1999, Equator has been the primary coffee partner for Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller, with custom blends served at The French Laundry, Bouchon, and Per Se.[9][10]

Equator was awarded Macro Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine in 2010[11], National Small Business of the Year by the United States Small Business Association (SBA) in 2016[12], and two Good Food Awards in 2016 for roasting Geisha variety coffees from Hacienda La Esmeralda and Finca Sophia in Panama[13]

Equator Coffees currently operates twelve retail cafes in California, including three locations in San Francisco (including the Round House Cafe)[14][15], two in Mill Valley, and individual cafes in Sonoma[16], Larkspur, Sausalito, Oakland, Burlingame, and Laguna Beach.[17]
