English Language Company (ELC) is a private English language school located in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 2003, it offers courses in general English, academic English, business English, Cambridge examination preparation, and CELTA teacher training, as well as junior and study tour programmes for secondary school students.[1]
Overview
ELC is situated in central Sydney, a short walk from Central Station. The school holds CRICOS registration, enabling it to enrol international students on student visas, and is a member of English Australia, the national peak body for English language colleges in Australia.[1] It is also a member of the International Association of Language Centres (IALC), one of two schools in Sydney to hold this membership.[2]
The school was founded by David Scott and Lyn Scott. David Scott has taught and managed English language institutions in Australia, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Malaysia. Lyn Scott has managed teacher training programmes across Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Poland, and China.[3]
Awards and recognition
ELC has won the Study Travel Magazine Star Award for Best English Language School, Southern Hemisphere on five occasions: in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013. Following its fifth win, the school received the STM "Superstar" designation in 2013, a lifetime distinction within the award category. As of 2025, no other school in the Southern Hemisphere has received this designation.[4]
In 2014 and 2015, ELC received the ASEAN Masterclass Award for the most outstanding English language school in the region.[4]
In 2016, ELC was highly commended in the NSW Export Awards in the Education and Training category, an awards programme administered by the New South Wales government and Austrade.[4]
ELC has also received the Ryugaku Journal Best School Award in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020; in 2020 it was ranked first in Australia and second worldwide in the Ryugaku Journal student ratings.[4]
Programmes
ELC offers a range of programmes for adult learners aged 18 and over, including intensive general English, English for work, academic English, and preparation courses for Cambridge ESOL examinations. The school operates as a Cambridge-accredited examination preparation centre and a Cambridge computer-based test centre.
Since 2016, ELC has offered a Junior Programme for students aged 12 to 17, combining English language tuition with cultural activities and supervised excursions. The programme accepts both individual students and organised study tour groups.
ELC also provides CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) preparation courses, accredited by Cambridge University.
Industry commentary
David Scott has been cited in trade publications on Australian education policy. In 2025, he commented to ICEF Monitor on the impact of Australia's AUD$2,000 student visa application fee on the English language teaching sector, describing the combined effect of the fee and rising visa refusal rates as a significant threat to independent English language colleges in Australia.[5][6]
