Elizabeth Askren is a Franco-American conductor, educator, and arts advocate. She is known for her work in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, her creative educational and outreach projects, her focus on mentoring young artists, and her initiatives to increase inclusivity in classical music. Currently, she is Director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra and Associate Professor Adjunct at the Yale School of Music.

Education

Elizabeth Askren studied piano and conducting at the Juilliard School, Oberlin Conservatory, the Conducting Institute of Bard College in the United States, the Schola Cantorum, and the École Normale de Musique de Paris in France. She holds a doctorate in music philosophy (magna cum laude) from the Romanian National Academy of Music "Gheorghe Dima" in Cluj-Napoca. She received the highest teaching diplomas awarded by both the French Ministry of Culture (certificat d'aptitude en direction d'ensembles orchestrales) and the Romanian Ministry of Education. She trained in arts administration at the Harvard Kennedy School,[1] Christie's Education, and the Cité de la Musique in Paris. Her musical mentors include conductors Marin Alsop and Lorin Maazel, and pianists Byron Janis and Sergio Perticaroli.

Conducting career

Elizabeth Askren has conducted at opera houses and with orchestras in North America and Europe, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Opéra National de Paris, Opéra de Dijon, New Orleans Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera,[2] Toulon Opera Orchestra, Koloszvári Magyar Opera, Romanian National Opera of Cluj, Orchestre Victor Hugo Franche-Comté, and Orchestre des Jeunes de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. She has been appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of Hawai'i Opera Theatre[3], has been a guest conductor, creative producer, and master teacher at The Dallas Opera,[4] and she was on the music staff for the 2024–25 season at Chicago Lyric Opera.

In 2024, Askren received an OPERA America Opera Grant[5] for her work as Music Director of Sensorium Ex, a multidisciplinary opera project by composer Paola Prestini and poet Brenda Shaughnessy, funded by the Ford Foundation and produced by VisionIntoArt and Beth Morrison Projects. The project explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, disability, and the human voice. Its presenting partners include the Kennedy Center, National Sawdust, The Shed, and Washington National Opera.

Teaching

Elizabeth Askren has served as a master teacher at The Dallas Opera's Hart Institute for Women Conductors[6] and at the Paris Opera Academy. She also was a judge in the Paris Philharmonic's inaugural La Maestra Competition for Women Conductors[7], alongside Marin Alsop.

In 2025, Askren was appointed Director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra and Associate Professor Adjunct at the Yale School of Music, beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year.[8]

Transylvania Opera Academy

Elizabeth Askren founded the Transylvania Opera Academy (TOA) in Cluj-Napoca, Romania in 2017. It is a professional development program offering mentoring and performance opportunities to young opera artists. The academy was created in response to the "talent drain" phenomenon in post-Communist countries, where emerging artists often leave in search of international training and career opportunities. It is designed to support the transition from student to professional, with an emphasis on artistic development, personal growth, and community engagement.

MaestraMagic!

In 2020, Elizabeth Askren created MaestraMagic!, a children's edutainment series that makes classical music and opera more fun and accessible to children of all ages. In 2024, she launched the Opera Bytes comic book series under the MaestraMagic! umbrella. The first volume adapts Mozart's The Magic Flute for elementary-school-aged readers[9]. The volume is currently available in English and Spanish on Amazon and IngramSpark, with additional language editions and audiobook and ebook formats in development.
