Draft:EMU-370

The EMU-370 is a planned South Korean high-speed train type that will be designed to operate at a maximum speed of 370 km/h (230 mph) in commercial operation.[1]

Development

In December 2025, the Korean government, the Korea Railroad Research Institute, and manufacturer Hyundai Rotem announced the completion of the main components and technology that would be implemented on a high-speed trainset capable of 370 km/h (230 mph) in service,[2] and a maximum speed of 407 km/h (253 mph).[3]

The traction motors on the EMU-370 are projected to be around 47 percent more efficient compared to the KTX-Cheongryeong which entered service in May 2024.

Current plans

Two pre-production sets are scheduled for completion and initial testing by 2030 while the first production sets are due by 2031.[3][2] There are no plans to immediately begin operations at 370 km/h as additional upgrade work is required.[2]

Impact

Once older models are phased out, the travel time between Seoul and Busan is projected to be shortened to less than two hours.[2] As of 2025, the average travel time on existing KTX service is around 2.5 hours.
