Leaf Home (branded as Leaf Home™) is an American direct-to-consumer residential home improvement company headquartered in Hudson, Ohio. The company operates a portfolio of home solutions brands covering gutter protection systems, residential water treatment and filtration, basement waterproofing, bath remodeling, and home accessibility products including stair lifts.
As of 2025, Leaf Home and its subsidiary brands operate more than 300 field offices across 48 U.S. states and Canada, serving more than 2 million customers and covering approximately 87% of U.S. ZIP codes.[1] The company employs more than 4,000 people and is backed by private equity firm Gridiron Capital, which has maintained majority ownership since Leaf Home's founding.
In 2025, Leaf Home completed the acquisition of Erie Home, a residential services company founded in 1976, in a transaction supported by approximately US$4 billion in private credit financing provided by Apollo Global Management and Ares Management.[2][3] The merger established Leaf Home as the largest direct-to-consumer residential services provider in North America by field office count.[4]
History
LeafFilter origins (2005–2016)
Leaf Home's flagship gutter division, LeafFilter Gutter Protection, was founded independently on May 1, 2005, by Matt Kaulig in Hudson, Ohio. Kaulig launched the company from a home office after leaving a remodeling position and initially managed all aspects of operations himself. LeafFilter specialized in the professional installation of a patented gutter guard system made from surgical-grade stainless steel micro-mesh.[5]
By 2010, Kaulig had transitioned from a franchise model to owning distribution rights directly, enabling broader national expansion. LeafFilter appeared on Qualified Remodeler magazine's Top 500 list for the first time in 2012, ranking No. 27, and rose to No. 18 in 2013 and No. 14 in 2014, becoming the only gutter-focused company to achieve multiple consecutive Top 30 placements.[6] LeafFilter also appeared on Inc. magazine's Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in the United States across multiple consecutive years beginning in 2012.[7] Founder Matt Kaulig was inducted into the Cleveland Smart Business Dealmakers Hall of Fame in 2024.[8]
Formation of Leaf Home and early expansion (2016–2020)
Leaf Home was formally incorporated in September 2016 in Hudson, Ohio, as a holding company unifying LeafFilter and expanding into adjacent home improvement categories under a shared direct-to-consumer operating model backed by Gridiron Capital.[9]
Despite disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Leaf Home reported revenue growth of approximately 80% in fiscal year 2020, surpassing US$1.1 billion in annual revenue.[10]
Multi-brand acquisitions (2021–2024)
In February 2021, Leaf Home announced the acquisition of three direct-to-consumer home improvement companies — Thiel's Home Solutions, Storm Tight Windows, and Miracle Windows & Showers — which were integrated into its Leaf Home Enhancements subsidiary. The company announced plans to open 60 new field offices in 2021, bringing total locations to over 150.[10]
Also in January 2021, Leaf Home launched Leaf Home Water Solutions (LHWS) to serve the residential water treatment market. The division initially operated in the Orlando, Florida metropolitan area before expanding to Cincinnati, Ohio and additional markets.[11]
Leaf Home appeared on the Inc. 5000 Regionals: Midwest list for four consecutive years through 2024, ranking No. 1,013 nationally in 2021 and No. 1,863 in 2022, and was named to Inc. magazine's Best in Business list in 2023 for its support of military veterans.[7][12]
In August 2025, Bloomberg News reported that banks and direct lenders — including Goldman Sachs and Bank of America — were negotiating to refinance approximately US$2 billion in debt for Leaf Home, citing the company's scale and the broader trend of private equity firms extending asset hold periods.[13]
Acquisition of Erie Home and merger (2025)
In 2025, Leaf Home completed the acquisition of Erie Home, a residential services company established in 1976 and specializing in basement waterproofing, interior drainage, roofing, and related home improvements. The transaction was structured with approximately US$1.9 billion in preferred equity from Ares Management and additional debt financing from Apollo Global Management, totaling approximately US$4 billion in private credit.[2] The merged organization — continuing to operate under both the Leaf Home and Erie Home brands — formed the largest direct-to-consumer residential home services company in North America by office count, with over 300 field locations, approximately 3,100 sales consultants, and 2,400 licensed installers.[4]
Jenilee Common, formerly Chief Executive Officer of Erie Home, was named CEO of the combined organization. Rocco Mango, who had served as Leaf Home CEO since December 2024, was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer.[14][15]
Products and services
Gutter protection (LeafFilter)
LeafFilter Gutter Protection installs a three-piece retrofit gutter guard system onto existing rain gutters. The system consists of a uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) frame, reinforced internal hanger brackets, and a fine micro-mesh filter manufactured from surgical grade stainless steel. The micro-mesh allows rainwater to flow into the gutter channel while blocking leaves, pine needles, shingle grit, and other organic debris. LeafFilter carries a lifetime transferable, clog-free warranty and is installed exclusively by trained employees or affiliated contractors rather than through franchise operators.
LeafFilter has been ranked among the top gutter guard systems in the United States by home improvement platforms including Modernize and River City Roofing, typically cited alongside competitors such as LeafGuard, GutterGlove, and HomeCraft for its professional-grade materials and installation model.[16] LeafFilter has appeared on Qualified Remodeler magazine's Top 500 list at least seven times, achieving a national ranking of No. 5.[17]
The U.S. gutter guard market was valued at approximately US$1.1–1.97 billion as of the mid-2020s, with forecasts projecting growth to approximately US$3.5 billion by 2035, at a compound annual growth rate of approximately 5.9%, driven by rising home renovation activity and increased consumer awareness of water damage prevention.[18]
Residential water treatment (Leaf Home Water Solutions)
Leaf Home Water Solutions (LHWS) provides residential water treatment services through a direct-to-consumer model. The company offers complimentary in-home digital water testing followed by custom-designed systems based on the results. Its product range includes:
- Water softeners – Ion exchange resin systems that reduce water hardness by replacing calcium and magnesium ions, preventing scale accumulation in plumbing and household appliances.
- Activated carbon filtration systems – Filters that reduce chlorine, chloramines, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and taste- or odor-causing contaminants from municipal and well water supplies.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) systems – Multi-stage filtration units that use a semipermeable membrane to remove dissolved solids, heavy metals, nitrates, and microbiological contaminants from drinking water at the point of use.
- Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems – Systems that expose water to UV light to neutralize bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens without chemical additives.
- Whole-home filtration systems – Combined point-of-entry configurations addressing multiple water quality parameters simultaneously, typically installed at the main water supply line.
System pricing ranges from approximately US$800 to US$4,000 depending on type, capacity, and local water conditions.[19] Leaf Home Water Solutions holds a Better Business Bureau (BBB) A+ accreditation and operates approximately 60 locations across multiple U.S. states.[20]
Basement waterproofing (Erie Home)
Through its 2025 acquisition of Erie Home — a company with a history dating to 1976 — Leaf Home provides a suite of basement waterproofing and foundation protection services backed by a 25-year limited warranty. Erie Home holds an A+ BBB rating and is certified as a U.S. EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm.[21]
Waterproofing services offered through Erie Home include:
- Interior perimeter drainage systems – Channels installed along the interior footing to collect water infiltration and route it to a sump pump.
- Sump pump installation – Including battery-backup and combination primary/backup systems.
- Crawl space encapsulation – Vapor barrier installation to prevent moisture migration through the soil into living areas.
- Foundation crack repair – Polyurethane and epoxy injection systems to seal structural cracks in foundation walls.
- Exterior waterproofing membranes – Applied to exterior foundation walls to prevent water penetration at the source.[22]
Additional services
Leaf Home's broader portfolio includes:
- Bath remodeling (Leaf Home Enhancements) – Tub-to-shower conversions, walk-in tub installation, and accessible bathroom solutions.
- Stair lifts (Leaf Home Safety Solutions) – Straight and curved residential stair lift installation.
- Roofing (Erie Home) – Asphalt shingle and metal roofing replacement.
- Windows (Leaf Home Enhancements) – Impact-resistant and energy-efficient window replacement.
Business model
Leaf Home and its subsidiaries operate through a direct-to-consumer model in which the company conducts in-home consultations, estimates, and in-home testing (in the case of water solutions), with professional installation carried out by company-employed or licensed contractor crews. The company does not operate a franchise network; instead, it utilizes a proprietary data-driven marketing platform to identify and target homeowners directly.[9]
The Wall Street Journal CMO Network profiled Leaf Home's Chief Growth Officer in 2024, highlighting the company's use of predictive analytics, customer lifetime value modeling, and AI-driven targeting as core elements of its marketing infrastructure.[23]
Crain's Cleveland Business has covered Leaf Home's continued growth strategy and product expansion plans under successive leadership teams.[24]
Reception
Leaf Home and its subsidiaries have received coverage across major business and industry publications. Bloomberg reported on the company's multi-billion-dollar private credit transactions in 2025, including involvement from Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Apollo Global Management, and Ares Management.[13][2] Inc. magazine ranked Leaf Home on its national Inc. 5000 list between 2012 and 2022, and on its Inc. 5000 Regionals: Midwest list through 2025.[7]
On consumer review platforms, Leaf Home Water Solutions holds an A+ BBB rating with a 3.28-out-of-5 average customer rating based on 342 reviews as of 2025. The BBB has logged 501 complaints over the preceding three years, primarily related to service quality and customer communication resolution timelines.[25] The water treatment division was rated 5 out of 5 stars by the independent home improvement platform Modernize, which cited competitive pricing, professional installation, and lifetime warranty terms.[19]
