Douglas CDMO is a New Zealand-based contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) of pharmaceutical products. It is a division of Douglas Pharmaceuticals, founded in 1967 as a distributor of prescription medicines. The company started manufacturing and developing its own drugs before formalising its CDMO service in the early 2020s.

The company specializes in the development and commercialization of complex and high-potency pharmaceutical products, particularly in softgel and liquid formats.

History

Douglas was established in 1967 in West Auckland by pharmacist Sir Graeme Douglas. Starting with its own cough syrup brand, Kofsin, the company began importing niche pharmaceuticals and packaging them at Douglas' chemist shop before distributing them to other pharmacists.

In the early 1970s, Graeme sold his pharmacy to develop and manufacture more products.

By the late 1980s, Douglas was selling over 40 products and had a revenue of $25 million, which increased in ten years to more than $70 million.[1]

In the 2000s, Douglas significantly increased its investment in Research and Development (R&D), specifically targeting export markets in North America, Europe, and Asia.

In 2022, Douglas opened the new Douglas Innovation building, a $50 million research and development facility[2] at its headquarters in Henderson, Auckland. This enabled further specialty manufacturing capabilities to enable growth of its CDMO services.

In 2025, the expansion of Douglas CDMO and its international focus was a significant factor in the company winning the inaugural New Zealand Manufacturer of the Year Award[3], presented by the Minister for Manufacturing, Chris Penk.
