Draft:Deuce Three Productions

Deuce Three Productions is an American film and television production company founded by filmmaker Curtis Hanson. The name of the company is derived from Hanson's belief that every movie he made was a long shot achieved against tremendous odds, comparable in poker to turning a deuce and a three into a winning hand.

Early Production Activity

Deuce Three’s first production credit is the music video for "Things Have Changed," the song written and recorded by Bob Dylan for the Hanson-directed film Wonder Boys (2000). Working from a treatment written by the movie's music supervisor, Carol Fenelon, Hanson shot new footage for the video that recreated key scenes from the film, with Dylan assuming the role portrayed in the movie by Michael Douglas. By seamlessly intercutting the new footage with clips from the feature, Hanson emphasized the connection between Dylan's lyrics and the film. Following the completion of the video, Hanson invited Fenelon to join him as his producing partner at Deuce Three. The song subsequently won both the Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Feature Film Production

Deuce Three’s first film production credit is the Hanson-directed film In Her Shoes (2005). In subsequent years, Deuce Three was also among the production entities on the feature films Lucky You (2007; directed by Hanson), The Big Year (2011; directed by David Frankel) and Chasing Mavericks (2012).

Television Production

In 2007, Hanson and Fenelon entered into a development deal with CBS/Paramount to create, develop and produce television programming under their Deuce Three banner.[1] The company’s television credits include: the series Three Rivers (2009) for CBS/Paramount; the movie Too Big to Fail (2011) for HBO; and “Hoke” (2014), an unaired FX pilot based on a series of books by Charles Willeford.

Leadership

Deuce Three Productions was managed jointly by Hanson and Fenelon from 2000 until 2012, when Hanson retired from filmmaking due to an illness that ultimately proved fatal.[2] Since that time, Fenelon has served as the company’s sole CEO.[3]

Donation of Curtis Hanson Papers

In 2023, Deuce Three donated a substantial portion of its archives related to Hanson’s filmmaking to the Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills, California.[4] This collection, which includes annotated drafts of screenplays, photographs, correspondence, detailed daily production documents and press, is administered by the library’s Special Collections division as "The Curtis Hanson papers.”[5]
