Derick Wilson (18 June 1947 - 16 November 2024) was the co-founder of the Understanding Conflict Trust and co-author of a five book series "Nurturing Hope" and "Understanding Conflict... and finding ways out of it"[1]. He was also a noted member of the Corrymeela Community along with it's founder Ray Davey.
Biography
Derick Wilson is known as an influential figure involved in combating sectarianism and working toward peace in Northern Ireland by encouraging engagement between youth from both Catholic and Protestant backgrounds. He graduated from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1969 and went on to postgraduate study in Youth Work, Adolescent development, Project Management, Developmental Group Work at the University of Wales until 1970.
He was actively involved in the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council between 1970 to 1990[2] from whom he received a lifetime achievement award.
He received a Fulbright Program Award from the Philosophy Department of St. Philip's College (United States) in 2020[3]
Along with his wife Dot, and a number of other parents, in 1987 he founded Mill Strand Integrated School in Portrush, the first in the region at a time when it came at great political risk.[4]
