Draft:Dena Shottenkirk

Dena Shottenkirk (born February 16, 1954) is an American philosopher, artist, and founder of the art and public philosophy nonprofit talkPOPc (Philosophers’ Ontological Party club).[1] Her work centers on the intersection of epistemology, perception, and aesthetics.[2] She is an Associate Professor at Brooklyn College (City University of New York)[3] and a former staff art critic for Artforum and Art in America magazines.[4][5] Shottenkirk has received a Fulbright Scholar fellowship[6] and has published several books and articles on philosophy.

Education

Shottenkirk was born in Dodge City, Kansas. She attended the University of Kansas, where she received a B.A. in Philosophy and Art in 1977.[3] After relocating to New York City, she attended the New York Studio School, followed by the Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University) where she received an M.F.A. in 1981. She received her doctorate in philosophy from the Graduate Center (City University of New York) in 2005.[3]

Research areas

Shottenkirk’s philosophical research focuses on the ways epistemology dovetails with aesthetics, with particular concern regarding issues of perception. Emphasizing the role of gist perception (the first approximate 300ms), Shottenkirk has developed a theory that explains how the initial gist perception influences both the objective content that we perceive as well as our subjective assessment.[7] Her work joins recent research in philosophy that diverges from the traditional emphasis on beauty in aesthetics to instead focus on the function of art in the formation of social beliefs.[8]
