Delight Quarry, now known as Quarry Place, is a former quarry in Reisterstown, Maryland, that has since been filled with water and redeveloped. The quarry is 125 acres (51 ha) and formerly mined primarily chromite. The quarry was purchased by the Arundel Corporation, a Maryland-based mining conglomerate, in 1964, and brought fully operational in 1968. However, the serpentine was not high enough quality, and the mine was shut down and slated for redevelopment in 1999. Although the effort met some resistance in the Baltimore County government, the Quarry Place development went forward and was completed by 2015. As of 2026, the site contains detached houses, row homes, and condominiums, as well as a public walking path.

History

Prior to founding

Before Delight Quarry was founded, chromite was already being mined around the Soldiers Delight area. Around 1810, members of the Tyson family set up five chromium mines in the area which operated until 1917.[2]

As an active mine

The quarry was first established around 1921 by Alexius Dyer Jr. and his family, which later evolved into the A. A. Dyer Company.[3][4] The quarry then was much smaller, at only 15 acres (6.1 ha), but still mined chromite.[3]

In 1964, the Delight Quarry was purchased alongside the entire A. A. Dyer Company by the Arundel Corporation.[4][5]

While it was operational, the mine produced primarily chromite, which was found in abundance in the serpentine rocks of Soldiers Delight.[2]
