Draft:David K. Dean

  • Comment: I have checked the three online sources, and none provide more than a passing reference to Dean. I cannot check the 1888 book or the two Erie Times, as they are all online, but the article does not suggest that they provide significant coverage of Dean, unless the 1911 one is an obituary - but we need more than one source. David K. Dean was a talented architect in Erie, PA where he moved from Buffalo, NY in 1873..[1]

Among Dean's notable architectural accomplishments are Erie's Washington School in 1875 at 128 W. 21st St., which is included in the West 21st Street National Register Historic District,[2] and the elaborate Erie City Hall in 1888[3]

By 1888 his business had expanded to become D.K. Dean & Son. The junior partner was Cyrus Dean, and the business was operated out of a building at 9th and State Streets on the busy northeast corner.[4] In 1892, David K. Dean and Son designed Erie's Villa Maria Academy, a sprawling Late Gothic Revival structure that spans a city block at 819 W. 8th, which is still standing and in use as low-income apartments and housing for seniors.[5] In 1893 D.K. Dean & Son, Architects, was dissolved and son Cyrus F. Dean carried on the organization in Erie's Downing Building[6] David K. Dean died at age 80 in 1911 at his residence at 1431 E. 8th Street in Erie.[7]
