Daniel Chung (born c. 1980s), known professionally as Danny Chung (and formerly by the stage name Decipher), is an American musician of South Korean descent. He is based in Seoul, South Korea. He is known for his work as a lyricist for The Black Label, having co-written multiple international hits for the girl group Blackpink, including "Whistle", "Playing with Fire", "How You Like That", and "Pink Venom".[1]

In 2025, Chung gained widespread recognition as a performing artist after providing the singing and speaking voice for the character Baby Saja in the Sony Pictures Animation film K-Pop: Demon Hunters. The film's soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard 200, making Chung one of the few songwriters to top the chart as both a lyricist and a featured performer.[2]

Discography

As lead artist

Early life

Chung was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a Korean-American household and was raised believing his biological aunt was his mother, a family detail he later discussed in interviews regarding his artistic inspirations.[3] He cited the "underdog energy" of Philadelphia as a major influence on his early rap career.[4]

Career

2010–2015: Career beginnings as Decipher

Chung began his musical career under the stage name **Decipher**. He emerged during the early 2010s wave of Asian-American YouTube musicians, gaining traction in the underground hip-hop scene. He collaborated with artists such as Dumbfoundead, Ailee, and Johnnyphlo.[5] His early work was noted for challenging the "model minority" myth through lyricism. Despite critical respect within the diaspora community, Chung struggled to find mainstream commercial success in the US market during this period and eventually shifted his focus to the South Korean music industry.[3]
